has anyone any opinions on redwood burl scales/blocks--as far as how workable they are and a general opinion of the quality and appearence. Is it a good , excellent , or just ok material. thanks marekz

I have used it on one knife, it worked pretty easily.the customer loved it and I thought it looked pretty great too.

Make sure it is stabilized.

if you were to pick your top 3 wood for handles what would it be?-marekz

Looks Great, Works Easy.
But.... It does have a tendency to crack even when stabilized while burning in handles on a hidden tang knife.
That's my 2 cents.

Its a soft wood that tends to crack or split when heavily burled. I find a lot of stresses in redwood burl that makes the finishing difficult.

Red mallee'

Dyed box elder

California buckeye

All three of these are very stable and finish beautifully. Stabilized.
