I'm considering a Reeder Grinder

RPS111 Belt Sander 2” x 72” - with 5” drive wheel set $995.00

Indexable Locking Handle (Red) - QTY: 2 Handles per order $36.00

RPS50 - Complete Grinder Bench $395.00

I have a 1hp Leeson and KBAC VFD for starters

No tax but shipping will be around $190

There are so many good ones out there but for some reason this one seems to pique my interest.

Anyone want to give some input on this setup?

Can’t go wrong with a reeder. I would sell the motor and up the HP.

Also, get the tilting feature. It is wildly useful.

If you could only do one of those things, go with the tilting. Just my $.02.

Yeah it would be reeder or ameribrade for me personally. With tilting as cliff said :)

Problem is, I think my kbac24 is only up to 1hp. I would have to sell both.

With the table it tilts.

What HP?

Do you have access to a 220v outlet? If not, you’ll be limited to a Kbac-27d and 1.5hp (and you’ll still want to be sure to use a 20amp outlet for that).

I use a 1.5hp motor and a Kbac-27d on both my Reeder 2x72 and disc grinder and haven’t yet felt like I’ve needed more power…. But I know plenty here like to go with 2hp+ motors on their grinders.

I live my Reeder. I would like a motor w/more horse power. 2 maybe 3 HP...

Alas, my garage doesn't have 220 so I'm stuck at 1.5... sigh

I do agree with the other posts the Reeder is a GREAT setup. I've copied the tracking setup for my homebrew 2X72 grinder. You'll be VERY happy with the grinder. Later if you decide for the SGA, from my reading/watching videos, and Stacy's reviews of the SGA, it does seem to be about the best SGA on the market.

Since you've already got the 1hp with VFD use that for the time being. Then when (if) you decided you "need" more hp, you can always upgrade later.

You will be happy with a Reeder. I was looking at them too.

I had a motor and drive also.

I went with a Pheer grinder though. Lots of people here use them.
It cost less, for what I wanted. I'd buy Mine again.

Tracks Beautifully Forward AND Reverse.

Mine doesn't tilt, but I'm not sure why I would want it to???

I've had my Reeder for a few years now and it is the best purchasing decision I've ever made. I've worked on a lot of different grinders and I think the Reeder is the best engineered and built grinder on the market today.

That doesn't mean the others are crap: I would say almost ALL the American made grinders on the market today are fantastic values (especially when you consider what the market was like 20 years ago). But the Reeder has been my favorite by far.

Do whatever it takes to go 220v and 2hp VFD at least. If that means sacrificing budget for tooling to get a 220 outlet run out to your shop, do it. You will not regret it.

Tilt is much like a VFD or reverse - until you've used them, don't tend to think they're necessary.
Haha.... I know that is the answer, but in my head i haven't worked out Why?

I freehand vertically on edge to make the profile lines look nice. Idk what else id use it for?

Heck...... I've already talked myself out of needing small dynamic nosebar tails.
I do them by eye pretty well. I'm thinking with the money I saved, it would be better used on a foredom or simular.......

It's hard to justify the money we spend.

Thanks everyone for the very positive input.

For those who might have tilting experience. Buying the Chassis with the rolling Table/Bench (that I was planning on getting) gives tilting ability. But probably takes 2 minutes more? Buying the Quick Tilt adds $495 to the order shipping same, but would be $595 later plus shipping. Is it totally nessasary?

What I'd be getting with the Table/Bench would be what he shows at the 6:30 mark in this video. So it probably takes a bit more effort to Tilt than the Quick Tilt.

The only difference I can possibly see is the less expensive Tilt drops the working height as it tilts over from the bottom of the Chassis via a henge. That might be something to think about.

In horizontal that thing is awfully low... I like mine almost chest height in horizontal. If you pair it though with the height adjust that would certainly work, I would just give them a call they are super helpful!

I’m starting to think I’m probably going to spend more than I originally thought going into this LOL
That’s what I learned too, when I was in your shoes a few months ago. I got it done for under $1500, but I had to assemble my own to do it. The a’la cart pricing is deceptive, and the honest truth is that if you want to buy (not build) a quality grinder with the required accessories and accoutrements to be a functional knife grinder you will be north of 2k.

I wouldn’t be afraid to start off with your 1hp motor & 24D though. You’ll eventually want more power, but you can address that over time. You’ll easily be able to repurpose your 1hp stuff after you upgrade your grinder.

I'm in for at least $20K with a grinder, disc sander, drill press, bandsaw, heat treat oven, hardness tester, multiple bench grinders for polishing and the list goes on and on...
