Reeder Grinder or...?

That’s what I learned too, when I was in your shoes a few months ago. I got it done for under $1500, but I had to assemble my own to do it. The a’la cart pricing is deceptive, and the honest truth is that if you want to buy (not build) a quality grinder with the required accessories and accoutrements to be a functional knife grinder you will be north of 2k.

I wouldn’t be afraid to start off with your 1hp motor & 24D though. You’ll eventually want more power, but you can address that over time. You’ll easily be able to repurpose your 1hp stuff after you upgrade your grinder.
Because I'm thinking I want more parts I'm definitely going to have to start off with the 24D and my 1hp, that is for sure. But what is 1/2hp going to give me. I want to run it off 120vac. I'd have to run a 220vac line otherwise.

Use what you have to get started and upgrade as funds permit. It's better to be grinding than not grinding at all!

You'll want more attachments as you grow with the grinder and belts are not cheap either and you'll go through a lot of those too!

I'm now thinking to get the Grinder, Wheel set with 5" drive wheel, Bench, Quick Tilt, and 2 Indexing Locking Handles for starters at $2010 shipped. I originally went into this thinking a lot less, but think the bench and quick tilt will make me happy LOL.

The reason for the Quick Tilt, is that it keeps the work height the same, rather than the hinge which drops the work height in the horizonal position.

I'm 6'1", so would want to be grinding at a comfortable height. I spoke with Reeder and was told they sell a riser kit for the Bench and Quick Tilt. But it only raises the grinder 2" (quick tilt riser). They said I could also make my own riser out of wood or material of choice.

Anyone here have both the Bench with the Quick Tilt, and want to comment on their value?

I agree with you totally on using the 1hp motor you've got. Later on, "IF" you want more power the 1hp will make a GREAT disk grinder allowing you to use 2 hp (even derated to 1.5hp) just fine.
Good call on the Disk Sander. This is the route I would probably go to get my money's worth out of the motor/vfd, rather than selling at a loss. And from videos I've seen of a disc sander, it looks like a very valuable tool to have.

That's crazy about the riser because the one in the video was like 12" of variable height lol

yeah that is a very special height adjusting setup that they really did for a college. Yes it tilts, but is not the basic Quick Tilt. Price for that one in the video is approximately $1500. The basic "riser kit" for either the hinged grinder or the Quick Tilt are basically standoffs that just raise it a bit.

Yeah that one that lifts up and down is cool but not $1500 cool, for me anyway LOL. I'll just go with the basic Bench and Quick Tilt

Disk sander is maybe Next on my list.....
For 2x72
Check out Pheer grinders. Mine was like 8-9 hundred (without motor and drive)
Around 9 with shipping

I agree with your height concerns.

I'm 6'2"

I made a pretty awesome custom stand out of aluminum.
I over think things. Figuring out my grinder height caused me more grief than it should of.... Haha. I love it.

I can stand in front of mine all day.

Did you get a Pheer that tilts?

I liking the pricing of the Reeder: Chassis, Wheel Set, Cabinet, Quick Tilt combo. Yeah, more that I was originally thinking. But, it seems an excellent base set of components, at a fair price, since I already have a motor and vfd that can get me up an running with just the platen at this point. I'm mulling over a small wheel setup included in the initial purchase 😁

Anyone here get aftermarket contact wheels they put on a Reeder Attachment Bar?

At the time the Pheer didn t tilt, not sure if they can now???

I once wanted a small wheel attachment, but I got pretty good at grinding small radius off the edge of the platten, and now I'm thinks it's probably a waste of money? I want a foredom instead. More useful.

The Foredom is awesome! My wife bought me one and I use it almost every day in the knife shop!

I'm considering a Reeder Grinder

RPS111 Belt Sander 2” x 72” - with 5” drive wheel set $995.00

Indexable Locking Handle (Red) - QTY: 2 Handles per order $36.00

RPS50 - Complete Grinder Bench $395.00

I have a 1hp Leeson and KBAC VFD for starters

No tax but shipping will be around $190

There are so many good ones out there but for some reason this one seems to pique my interest.

Anyone want to give some input on this setup?

Your out of the cheap and home built machine nothing wrong with home built. But cheap machine seem to be just that my sons mobile knife sharpeming business started with cheap machines they have all been replaced or upgraded or modified to make them hold up or even work. I was considering building my own im a fabricator of sorts and its was in my wheelhouse to do so. I was in Dallas and stopped by Reeder after seeing there machine I knew I could not make a better machine. They are eager to answer your questions and are not high pressure type of guys I bet they spent 45 minute to an hour with me, I did the math a hundred ways and I just couldnt find anything of similar quality for the same money.

The first thing id recommend is buying the machine frame with three tool bar slots. Your going to keep this machine for a while and eventually youll find you wished you had gone there. I dont know if that bumps you up in money much but its for sure something I would do now.

You can build your own tool bars but buy additional pulley shafts from Reeder I made most of my own and I dont think I saved any money you will want one of these for each pulley or accessories that requires one as they have to be adjusted for each pulley its not hard but its time consuming myself I am making bars for every pulley and item I have so there ready to work with and the Reeder red handled tool locks are high quality I have a number of cheap ones that the plastic handles dont last or function well so your not wasting your money if you buy them.

Forgo the work bench and build your own. If I can get pictures to load I will put mine up after I finish this write up. I took two manually adjustable height table legs welded cross braces for castors and then put a scissor jack in the middle that runs the table up and down with my electric Impact it works great. I had all of this laying around but I think for less than there base table you can build your own height adjustable table .Find the table legs at one of those office furniture liquidator places. The only thing I had to buy was casters off eBay and I suggest 400 pound rated ones.

While you have a motor upgrading to a two HP will be night and day different maybe sell your other motor and drive and start out with a 2 HP. Just my input

The rotary platen while expensive is really nice. I would think over the life of your machine you will get longer life less belt breakage on your thinner belts which could offset some of the costs but really this is one cool accessory. Its an interesting device.

Hopefully the phot loaded its not opening on my write up but the link transferred. I will create a new post and ry and load pictures for people who might want to see this simple and cheap adjustable height bench

Worth more than small roller attachment?

Depends I guess. The Foredom has a lot more uses for sure. There are so many things I use it for such as, grinding, polishing, drilling super small holes. Really nice for removing corrosion on old knives I clean up for people. Great for shaping handles as well...but I do love my small wheel attachment.

I had to put off my purchase and am again considering a 2x72. I wanted to ask those who might have the Reeder. Is anything proprietary? Meaning can I use/adapt other wheels, surface grinder, etc., and other accessories?

I would say it is one of the most adaptable grinders. Arms are 1.5", matching KMG and several other grinders. Bader and TW-90 have 1.25" bars, but their wheels and accessories can be used on 1.5" bars.

Not that I have found...
Is there anything like the “True-Tilt Bevel Grind Table” by Housemade?

What other grinders have a table that works the same way as the True-Tilt table by Housemade?

As far as grinding tables, Reeder has several sizes. They adjust nicely.

If you want a special table setup, most folks buy it as an aftermarket item from whoever makes the table. Contender Machine makes a really great7-axis multi-adjust worktable.

The true-tilt table is sold as a kit or you can make your own to fit your grinder. I think Pop's used to carry one like it. It is very basic and has almost no adjustments to make, so it is an easy build.
