Hello all. I have finished removing the coating from my Brute. As expected there are tool marks under the coating, but not as bad as I thought they would be. But they are particularly bad in the area of the "anvil" and near the logo as well. I bought some 400 and 800 grit wet or dry sandpaper. I cut off a piece of 400 and went to work on it, but it does not seem to be making any difference. The sandpaper seems to lose it's grittiness after just a few strokes. I'm thinking I may need a lesson in metal sanding. Is it better to wet the paper, and if so, what are you supposed to use? And are there any techniques that might shorten the job? The only experience I have sanding is with wood, so any help would be appreciated.

Your really going to have to start with a lower grit of sandpaper. If you have a lot of marks to remove you you might want to try 100 grit. You may be able to try 150 grit first and if that isn't doing enough then go with the 100. Then move to 220 grit then your 400 and 800. Using water or some kind of oil will help extend the life of the 220 grit and up if you got the wet/dry kind of sandpaper. Hope that helps.

I went and bought some 180 stuff (the coarsest they had) and will try that with some WD40. Thanks for the reply.

Bear in mind the lower the grit you go the more deeper your scratches are going to be.
If you are not using a sanding block of sorts , give that a try , I find when I am polishing a knife or removing rust , coating , etc it makes a major difference if the paper is backed with something hard.
Also sand in different directions , first towards you and away for a while then side to side , then switch back and forth , you will move far more metal in less time.
