Reflections On Convexing

Good to see you again, possum. I'd been wondering how the rework on the DC's edge was going. The belt sander is definitely useful for cutting down on the blister factor was sharpening khukuris. ;)

When convexing an edge, do you do only the chopping area to the tip or also the area down around the cho? The area around the cho almost seem hollow ground. It seems like you would have to remove a lot of the edge or metal to get it convex.

I sharpen the whole edge. The good thing about convex sharpening is that if you keep it up, the edge will become convex.

How do you sharpen the edge part with the curvature (infront of the cho)?

Kind of hard to do so with sandpaper and mousepad. Do you put something underneath the mousepad to make it concave first ?

I don't put anything extra underneath the mousepad. I use strips of sandpaper that are no more than 1 1/8" wide, that way I can sharpen the recurve as well as the rest of the blade. If you use too wide a strip of sandpaper you'll have trouble getting the middle of the recurve.
