Refresh my memory, re: GEC #72 Mini Lockback Hunter

I just got the new version a few weeks ago and it has no side to side play but it has very slight up and down play, so it's all good to me. I have a first run 72 with a spear blade and it has worse lock rock. I have it's big brother, 42 in ebony, coming tomorrow so we'll see if they improved their lockback design or I just got lucky on my 72.

I just opened the #42. Its a beauty! The lock is tight in all directions.

Just wanted to update...enjoy your knife!

Well, I have a couple 72s and a Half Congress on their way to me! I'll update on how the lockup is on the 72s when they arrive. Still trying to decide on weather to send the ebony 72 back to the seller or to GEC for repair. It really is a nice little folder. I love how slim it is. ...Now that I mostly have my 72 desires taken care of, I have my sights set on a few other models (I'm going to have to wait a while for the wallet to replenish before I can explore any more GEC models).

One of the dealers that I have communicated with today said he just heard back from Christine at GEC. She told him that she doesn't know about any plans for making more 72s anytime in the near future.

I've had 4 of the 72s and none of them had noticable side to side play. Three of them had some vertical play but not to the extent that it bothered me. With this type of lock it can be hit and miss across a lot of different brands.

I have a plum bone from the last batch and it seems fine, I think I got one like Ed's. It's a sweet knife

Hi Keith - Here's one from their latest run. Plumb Bone. I bought two of them with this Plumb Bone. Both have GEC's #1 Regular Clip blade.

These knives are tighter than an old spinster. No wiggle, wobble, or play of any sort. Very tight lockup. Couldn't be happier with them.

Hi all. I thought I'd update this thread since I received my 72 yesterday. I lucked out and got one exactly like Ed's ..... no wiggle, wobble, or play of any sort. Judging from the comments on this thread and other recent threads I feel very fortunate to have received one of the "good ones". It's too bad that it has to come down to the "luck of the draw" when purchasing, as these are very sweet knives when done right.

I'm glad to hear that you got a good one! Unfortunately, it does seems like a crap shoot with the 72s.

It really is too bad. After going through two in one week, I think I am all done with taking my chances on the 72. If I can find one that the seller can guarantee has no blade play, I will pick it up. I found another one one on the net (last one I can find online), and the seller told me it has slight up and down blade play (it is a northfield cocobolo 72). Two of the plum versions slipped through my fingers this week by a matter of minutes. I really wish I could have located a tight one.

I now might consider picking up a linerlock GEC or the 42 lockback, but I'm not so sure anymore. I'm a little irritated with GEC because of my 72 experience (the 72 was the one GEC that I was the most interested in).

I bought a Beaver Tail 72 and traded into a Northfield 72. Both are great and get carried and used most every day (not in the same day). Slight vertical play, but I like them so much I overlook that.
