Regression of me, or technology???

....avoid Imgur then as well. Laughable bunch of fools.
I was scrolling through some photos a member had posted with an imgur link a couple of days ago. Some cool photos and clips, and way too much political ranting. Would be nice to just leave it with photos.

I still own 1.5 working vhs players. And a sweet Aiwa 2 tape stereo. 😁

I still own a combo VHS/DVD player/recorder and 2 combo VHS/DVD players. I also still own over 200 VHS tapes. There were many more before.

The original plan was to transfer all of VHS tapes not available on DVD to DVD. Did a few of those but it took too long and then most of the VHS got put on DVD which negated the original plan and made playing the VHS tapes unnecessary.

Was throwing out old VHS tapes as they were replaced w/DVDs then stopped doing that because I still liked keeping the tapes to use as bookshelf decorations and, while most of the tapes are wortheless, there are a few that are worth a lot of $ because the movie has NEVER been transfered to DVD.

However, fact is, I haven't played any of my VHS tapes for YEARS but I do still like having them available so that I can if I want to do so. ;)

As for photo sites, I only use imgur to create a url for photos to upload them to the Net.

For some reason, imgur's limited editing features don't work for me anymore. So, I have to download pics to my laptop, crop & edit them in Paint and then upload the edited pics to imgur for posting here or elsewhere.

I don't use IM, FB, TT or any other social media sites, except for Twitter & Mastadon which I use only for news and info -- not for any significant social interaction, which can easily become toxic.

The generous use of filters and the mute/block options is the only reason I can stand using Twitter. Mastodon isn't as bad as Twitter, so I haven't had to use filters or mute/block there much yet.

It would be nice if someone would create a Mastodon server (aka "instance") just for knife owners and collectors but BF is really all that I need to satisfy my knife obsession. :)

I'm 50.
Kinda old school. Not a techie or however that's spelled?
I work in New Product Development/Engineering.
People are surprised that I suck at doing So many things..... I get teased and ridiculed daily.
When I'm Actually surprised that I'm able to do A lot of things that others only dream of, in broad depth of interesting areas. I can make Anything.
I have Many patents.

I'm not bragging, that might just put in perspective how I don't fit into This world......

I grew up in a time when it took all day hooking up speakers to your TV.
Remember how difficult the first VCR's were to install?
Geez, months for the early computers. Or even longer!

I thought we were past those days?
My last ten years or so were so easy..... Laptops, phones, TV's, dvd, rocu, etc etc.......

WHY CAN'T I FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO INSTAGRAM????

It's Soooooo non intuitive. Ive tried a few times to post a few of my knives that I make there as an archive so I can show people my entire work....... Ugh, does it Suck.

They only give you a few buttons, that don't do anything I want!
I wish the knife community would use a different app

Can I even post More than one photo at a time?

I can feel all the teenagers laughing at me for being this lame.

Anybody else struggle with the simplest things? Haha. :/I
P.S. I'm struggling with emailing, and passwords on the Way too many devices we are forced to use day to day. I was born in the wrong time period.

I can sympathize. It sucks getting older and working in the technology fields. Last week I was in a meeting with a new team and these guys are a few years out of college. They were explaining something technical and discussing it like it was completely obvious, but it was over my head. Never went to a 4 year college like most of my coworkers and worked my way up from the grunt jobs. When I get lost in those discussions it starts to feel like I don't belong there.

As far as the passwords go, get a password manager tool. Just never lose the main one to open the password list! Whichever one you choose, do a quick Internet search on it to make sure it is secure. At least one of them exposed a bunch of customer's passwords, so the stand alone tools might be better choice. Check for a company approved one if this is for your work machine.

I've tried password managers and I don't like them.

If you decide to use 1, just don't use LastPass. Too many confirmed hacks. What good is it to use a password manager when the password manager gets hacked and your master password and everything else is available on the "dark web?"

Hear good things about 1Password but I can't speak for it myself.

Personally, I just write them down and store the list in my gun safe along w/my laptop when I'm gone. I use unique passwords for every "significant" account and 2FA or 2FAS whenever available, whether significant or not. I use 2FAS here and have never been hacked.

All the passwords that I create are based on unique words and letters known and significant only to me in combos that I can remember varying in length fro 8 to 14 alpha, numberic and special characters.

Not as good as random generated password but I don't like not knowing and being able to remember or write down the passwords, which is very "regressive" of me. ;)

I am trying out Password Safe and KeePassXC. Password Safe has an older interface, but as long as it works it is fine. They do not require Internet access to use. Just have to be sure and back up the safe files on a schedule. Plenty of videos out there on both tools showing how to use them.

What keeps me up at night is what happens when we actually get Old?

I believe (I am a conspiracy theorist) that "they" are purposely making things confusing..... To get us to surrender Everything, and every decision to the state.

Health insurance is Complicated
Buying/owing Anything (home, car, phone, computers, etc.) Complicated
Traveling, leaving the country is Complicated
Investing/pensions/S.S is Complicated
Voting and electing honest representatives that governor us is Complicated

It's all done on purpose. Prove me wrong.haha.
:/

For websites and not important stuff, just put the passwords in a notepad file on your computer desktop and phone, then copy paste into the password needed, for the sake of ease of use.

No, it is not a secure way to store such thing, but if someone has access into my computers and phone, I have worse thing to worry about.

I’m not sure if it’s coincidence or related, but it seems as technology increases, the earth and human condition are decreasing.

-Flicker used to be a thing for photography..... I'm not sure if it exists still?
I remember liking it. Almost 20 years ago

-I'm not on Facebook anymore. I was only briefly, probably over ten years ago.
It seemed way too invasive to me, way back then.

-Tumblr is easy to navigate, but everyone is seven degrees left of being an "artist" there...... And way too politically brainwashed for me.

-snapchat, I tried years ago too, but it kinda freaked me out.

A logical question would be ....... "Hey, why not post them HERE?"
I will.... I plan on updating my membership soon.

*but I Don't trust this place for long term storage/archival to show people.
some of My older pics here are now gone on various topics. Lost.
Not cool.
I’m a 20s dude, and you sir are right on the money with Tumblr. I won’t elaborate any further lest the discussion strays into politics. 😅

Social media can be great for keeping in touch with loved ones, but that’s about it for me. Maybe I’m old fashioned at heart, but Facebook is too “loud” for me. Lots of distractions on Instagram too. I like Bladeforums for getting feedback on specific knives from actual users, and I try to share what I can too.

😂 Lmao. You can’t scroll one inch without going “Uhuh, okay.” I’m not sure why that site is extremely politically skewed in one direction. It’s almost fascinating.

Imgur’s pretty useful for uploading pics though.

Yesterday, I watched a documentary on Netflix, I think it was called The Human Condition.
It hit social media pretty hard, including Youtube TV.
It’s not to be found today.
I don’t know if things you have watched, go away? Or if it’s run was over? Or it was true?
Did anyone see it, or, are the paint chips I ate kickin’ in again?

I'm 55. I hate the technology aspect of my career. Every year terminology, procedures, and platforms change but it never makes my job easier. Challenges increase but the salary does not keep pace. Things that used to be done on paper are now much more difficult to complete despite the promises of "the ease of a paper free workplace". I rely on colleagues for help with the new computer stuff but I'm able to reciprocate in other areas so I don't feel like a burden. I have over 3,000 unread emails on my work account and I don't plan on catching up. I'm unwilling to spend 20 minutes a day to weed through it to find the 10% that is actually relevant to me. I plan to retire in June and then get another job so I can have health insurance. If I could stick it out, I could maximize my retirement but I'm so tired of teaching the prospect of continuing is untenable. 30 years is more than enough.

I'm betting it's because people don't work at a job forever anymore, and with the constant influx of new people coming in.
Every new person needs to establish their percieved value. Prove that they are needed. So they change something.... "to make it better"

New programs/software never seem to make the work easier....... just Different.

I see it all the time with low level management.

My family was fortunate in timing.
My father founded 3 co.s under one roof. I bought a Commodore 64.. the future was at hand! (PITA) Granted, that was tech. in its infancy.
We did things, inner office, the old school way.
Everyone knew there job & coordinated efforts, if a problem came up, it got fixed, life continued.
On the job site, it was mechanical. We got by without cells and laptops.
Yet, here I am..posting🤪 Tis more a hobby in my world.

I didn't see it, but sounds intresting.....

Maybe 8 or so years ago my wife wanted a tablet to read books from the library.
She's an Avid reader. Reads All the time.

a electronic device to read books sounded weird to me.
So I looked into them to see what they were all about??? People seem to like them.
Anyhow, it opened a door to one of my bigger conspiracy theories. Some of which are already True and happening today. :O Hahaha!

This is true, and has been going on for over ten years now.... I've even heard what was made to be an innocent story on NPR about this.
Apparently, with e-books. A bunch of people are reading the story. It sells well. But for some reason most of the people are slowing down, and stop reading after Chapter 6.

With e-books everything is monitored.
How many books from the author/publishing house you buy.
How often you read.
how many pages/chapters per reading secession. Etc. Etc.......

Doesn't sound so bad, right? Well..... Going back to everyone getting bored, losing interest in the story around Chapter 6..... The author has the ability to "tweak" the story. Change it. Make it more captivating to the audience, so they Buy More books again from the company......... WOW!!!

That terrifies me.
It has been going on now for more than ten years.

So, what's happening now/today?
I have seen online news articles get "edited" changed.
It seems like they control the narrative. They can say Anything they want, get you to think and feel a certain way. Manipulate your information and decision making.
Then days, weeks, months when it doesn't suit them they can change the facts again.
Nothing is real.
It Used to be that the written word meant something.
Our Founding Fathers were big proponents of using the printing press to educate the masses.

Now, it's our sword we fall on. We know nothing. Nothing real.
It's called Censorship.

I really believe written books. Actual books with paper and ink will be banned in my lifetime.
I keep a paperback dictionary in my desk from 1978.
Look how many definitions have changed in the last few years?
I have proof, and that is going to be bad in their eyes...... Time for another book burning, from them.....They will call it about Environmentalism. Can't have books.... too many resourses to bleach paper for our books, or something?

Our whole education system will be a multi-tiered system with who (can) learns what.
I bet we already have That now. :(

You nailed the documentary I watched. Every key stroke is recorded. They’re building an avatar of you.
Your viewing is being focused and you are being fed what you like, so advertisers hit your subconscious.
You are the product.
I have a car, that 6 years ago, was cutting edge. It had a recall. When I got it back, it wouldn’t idle or produce much power. The mechanic told me to drive it so, 1. So it could relearn its the performance version and not the economy car it’s based on. 2. It can relearn my driving technique. I did, it learned, now we’re one. Spooky.
