Regrind vs. Ritter Blade for Mini Griptilian?

Hi guys, I'm new here and have a question. So my EDC knife is a Mini Griptilian with D2 blade and AWT scales, and I have been pleased with it for EDC tasks. However, last week I borrowed my brother's Benchmade 527 Mini Presidio and was really impressed with its slicing ability due to its very thin grind (i.e, very thin blade just above the edge).

This got me thinking that my mini grip would be pretty much the perfect knife for me if it had a blade with a thinner grind. Here are the two options I am considering:

1) Buy a Ritter Grip, which I understand has a thinner grind than the standard mini grip blade (but is the Ritter blade as thin as the Mini Presidio blade)?

2) Keep my existing D2 blade and get a regrind from a reputable shop like Razor Edge to thin the blade down to something like 0.01".

Any advice on the options above? Is the Ritter blade as thin as the 527? Any recommendations on the relative merits of regrinding my existing D2 blade vs. upgrading to the Ritter with M390?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about the comparison between edge thickness, and have never had a re-grind of any type, but you can't go wrong with a Ritter Blade. It's a high flat grind and has a great shape.

What angle are you using currently? My local knife guy looked at a chart and told me I could go with a much lower angle based on my steel. I have the new griptilian in Gray and blue. I forget the steel.
Do try a lower angle and if you don't like that but a new knife! You always need an extra good knife. Office desk? Car? Camp gear? Gift? So many uses.

I have considered a regrind on a BM551 but decided to just pick up a Ritter Grip if I ever loose what have now.

Tell me, how do you like your AWT scales? I want to like them but don't want metal scales. If they just would make them in G10....:D

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

@M.Freeze: Looks like we're neighbors - cool! I work in Chesterfield.

@Slayer01: I have the edge sharpened to 20 degrees per side currently. I'm more concerned about the blade thickness right behind the edge though, which would still be there if I went with a steeper angle on the edge. I found for example that the mini presidio with the thinner blade was more effective at cutting apples, whereas my mini grip with stock blade feels a bit "choppy". I like your idea that there's nothing wrong with having multiple quality knives. :-)

@sabre cat: I really like the AWT scales. They really take the quality of the mini grip up several notches. Nice and solid, much better shape vs. factory, the overall profile feels thinner, and it carries better/smoother in the pocket. Probably not quite as grippy as the stock scales, but still fine for my needs. I would buy more for subsequent grips that I buy.

For the cost of your Grip and a regrind, I think you could better afford a Ritter. Very nice, that Ritter.

@DocT: You raise a good point about the cost. As far as the cost goes, it looks like the cost would be in the same ballpark for a regrind or a Ritter mini, so the cost does not seem to be a big difference in this case. More concerned with getting the thin grind and slicing performance, whether it's the Ritter or the regrind.

The honey comb awt scale is better than the smooth ones I have both.

I know everyone raves about the Ritter profile but is it all that thin behind the edge? It's better than the standard profile but I wasn't under the impression it was all that thin still and was a bit choppy. If you want very thin I'd have it ground. It may be no less expensive than a Ritter grip but it will be exactly what you want and not just close.

I recently stared carrying my pm2 in my back pocket and mini grip in my front pocket, I was skeptical at first and really did not like my pm2 in fact I almost gave it away and than I used it and wow! Pm2 and mini grip perfectly compliment one another. I don't think you can get the best of both worlds and mini grip will never be as good a slicer as a pm2 and pm2 can't really compete with utility of mini grip in my opinion there are some major advantages to a thin blade and a little thicker blade.

Just to update y'all on how this came out for me: so I ordered the Mini Ritter as that would be a more reversible first step than regrinding the stock blade. Plan was to try the Ritter, then pursue the regrind if not satisfied.

So far I'm satisfied with the Ritter. The blade profile seems much thinner behind the edge vs. the stock mini grip blade...hard to tell if it's actually as thin as the mini presidio, but I'm pleased with the slicing performance so far, having sliced a couple of apples and my thumb.

I had planned on sending it to one of you pro sharpeners for a nice compound double bevel edge, but it seemed plenty sharp out of the box for EDC tasks. I still might pursue the double bevel later. Thanks to all for the advice!
