Regular vs. 21

And just to add a footnote, the differences between the Classic and the 21 are not great. Others may have different opinions, but to me the major difference is the large, semi-circular cutout on the non-locking side of the Classic and 21 compared to the smaller, scalloped cutout on the Regular. That's why some of the posts above say the ergos on the Classic and 21 are better. Obviously, Chris Reeve at one point thought the Regular was better, since he changed to that design on purpose and in fact the same general thought was carried forward to the Umnumzaan (in terms of access to the lockbar). I prefer the Classic/21 arrangement but YMMV.

I'm sure you'll get some pictures here shortly, but I just wanted to state that it isn't stupid at all to come here and ask basic questions. This is fun - no competition. I would venture that without exception, you'll get good information from willing folks who just love to share knowledge about things knife related.

Welcome and keep asking. There are some good "Stickies" at the top of the forum page that are permanent and will give you some interesting information. Basically, the three models you've mentioned (Regular, Classic, 21) are separate, individual Sebenza variations. The Regular and Classic have been discontinued, with some minor exceptions. Currently, the 21 is the standard Sebenza that is available from Chris Reeve and retailers. There is some old stock still floating around and LOADS of aftermarket sales going on, so you can find a model that suits you pretty easily.

Enjoy.

Classic's for me all the way or P-models.................................

Thanks for the welcoming response. 'Much appreciated. I hope we can get some comparative photos soon.

I am a regular guy myself, eventhough I do have a Large 21 that gets carried and used. I love the handle and blade profile of the regular design better though.

This is going to sound stupid, but I've never been able to tell the difference.

You can see in my pic above, the regular on the bottom has a bullnosed tip and ridges on the lockbar, the 21/classic has a pointy tip, and a slim smooth grip all the way down the handle.

At one time I liked the regular better because the guard is lower so that lets your finger get closer to the cutting edge for more control... kind of like a choil. After being pulled in by the looks of the Micarta 21 and picking one up and using it, I have found that I do like the Classic/21 shape better. Yes the guard is larger and pushes your front finger back more than the regular.. BUT if you really need that much control there is enough room to slide you finger between the blade and guard and use it like a half choil. Most of My cutting does not need to be that choked up on the blade and the larger guard just feels better on the 21/Classic. IMHO

All that said, I still have days that I like the Regular over the 21  :D

You can't go wrong with a Chris Reeve folder

I daily carry either a Large or Small 21, depending on what I'm wearing. My Large Regular remains a Safe Queen for the time being. As I said in an earlier post I prefer the Regular to the 21; however I feel better carrying the 21 knowing I can replace it without worry if need be. That being said, the 21 like all Sebezas is a great knife, I certainly don't feel I'm missing out by not carrying my Regular.

Thanks for the pics!
what is a bg-41? how is it different from the regular?

After buying a Classic Sebenza I realized I'd much prefer the Regular Sebenza.

Bring back the Regular!

Bring back the Regular!

It's still available, both large and small, but only as a limited edition annual model.

Rickster -- what a nice unique. I would surmise that this one was done by Chris himself.

When I talked to Heather after receiving it she said she would bet that Chris did it, But there was a chance that Scott Cook did it also. Either was it was a home run to find a 15 year old plus knife in Brand New Condition. I kinda have my eye on something else, It "MAY" be going up for sale.........................

:D:D:D Rickster :D:D:D

Although I started out with a preference for the Classic, I have grown to like them both equally.

The Regular definitely has a more gripping handle with the Ti bumps but I never had any slips with the Classic either so I wouldn't be too worried about that when choosing one over the other. One thing I do know through hours of gruelling research is that the Regular will give you a sore thumb quicker than the Classic when sitting playing at home, opening and closing the blade :p

There is more belly to the Regular blade and some people prefer that.

The smoothness will come the same on both. I carried a Walnut Regular every day for just over a year and I defy anyone to show me a smoother Sebbie. It was fantastic. Recently, I have carried a Snakewood Classic for the past few weeks and it's getting every bit as good

I suppose I am just saying relax, enjoy choosing your Sebenza and rest assured it won't be a lesser knife that the other one.

Mark
