I've been offered these blades as a trade item. I can only choose one.

The SYKCO Test Team Edition Regulator and the Swamp Rat Ratweiler (Gen2)

Which would be a better hunting/camping/wilderness knife?

Pros and cons for each?

Thoughts and opinions?

TT Regulator is more rare, and value will only rise on those....but the ratweiler is a better wildness blade in my opinion. But that differential heat treat the on the TT regulator is the stuff of legends! Lol

Never held a Regulator however I'm a huge fan of the Ratweiler.

I have one of the new ones (better??) and it's my 'end of the world' blade for sure.

I own both...they're wonderful blades. :)

Ratweiler for a user. Great ergos for my hand. The posted pic looks like 1st Gen. to me, however, especially in the handle area.

TT Regulator has some collect-ability attached to it. But they're not impossible to snag. They come up on the Exchange from time to time. It's a bit thick behind the edge for my taste as a user.

So, if I were planning on using...I'd go with the Rat. It'll chop a bit better and slice better, especially since it's stripped.

Regulator has Res-C handle going for it, if you're a fan of Res-C <like me>, plus it's pointier if you're needing to stab & penetrate something.

The Rat you have pictured has DHT like the Regulator also, BTW.

The Gen 1 or gen 2 ratweilers were differentially heat treated? I can't tell if it's a gen 1 or 2 pictured. Either way, both are great!

When you say "Gen 2", are you talking about the second batch with the different handle from the original issue, or the recent re-issue?

It was my understanding that all of the Ratweilers from the first issue (both handle types) were differentially heat-treated; is that correct?

When I say gen 2, yes I am referring to the original with the different handle type. Not the recent reissue.

Not sure about DHT on last run of Ratweilers...but the one in the pic has a visible hamon. So does mine.

Got a Chopweiler with DHT from the same era also.

I know the most recent run of ratweilers did not have the DHT. Busse and kin discontinued that, which is why you only find it on older models.

What is your expected use for it/them? If it's a user, I'd most likely go with the Ratweiler, for putting away, the Regulator.

I will say, I've never had my hands on the Regulator, and I own a Ratweiler, so I may be biased.

I have both in the newer versions and I agree with Gruntmedik ^^^

Keep us posted what you decide :)

I've not held a Regulator before but I do own a Ratweiler and I can tell you it going to be hard to beat the ergonomics of the handle. Its an awesome blade with a one of a kind reputation.
