I'm a little intimidated by the quality of work you guys do so I rarely post any of my work. I received a little praise for this one so I thought I'd post it and see if you guys can critique my results and maybe give me some feedback. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Cold Steel SRK in Carbon V
Homemade micarta with 3m fiberglass resin
Fabric for the guard is black and tan linen
Fabric for the handle unknown, pair of slacks from the closet (my wife would stab me with this if she discovers my deed)

Shoot!... Looks great. Only bad thing is that it would be mightly slippery if covered with blood :)

That's some good-looking "bathtub micarta"! And I like the contouring on the scales, too.

Very nice! Some of the nicer homemade iv seen! Good luck with the wife to:thumbup:

The mycarta looks amazing. Good job on the handle material. what did you use to compress it?

Overall it's good.
I really like the shape of the top half of the handle but the butt looks too plain to me. I think giving it a little more defined shape would look better than having the whole end rounded.
Also, it looks like you might have had voids in the material (you can see it in the second pic). That's to be expected with homemade stuff. You might want to fill the voids with more resin then sand it flat again.

Other than that I like it. It's a huge improvement over the factory handle.

I attached the guard and spacers then wrapped strips of resin soaked linen around the tang. Then wrapped it tightly with plastic wrap. I further compressed it with tight layers of masking tap.

I do get some voids with this process. I dremeled out and filled the major ones with additional resin soaked fabric but didn't sweat the small ones since this is just a user knife for myself.

Thanks for the tip on the butt, now that you mention it I can see that as an area for improvement.

Wow, I wouldn't have thought you'd get good enough compression with wrapping plastic and tape. I'm impressed.
One thing's for sure, that handle isn't coming off!

Again, good job :)

I have been experimenting with it for a while, since you can get some really cool patterns this way. I've found that you have to do layers over three to four applications, sand between each one. If you try to do it all at once you can't wrap the fabric tight enough, you get horrible voids, and crummy compression.

Here's another one that I did. You can spot the voids right away in the transition between the colors. But again, it's a user and more practice.
