I'm just pissed:( I can't get this kind of money off ebay (or anywhere for that matter) for most of my real, guild quality, customs. A sucker may be born every minute but he never offers to buy my stuff.
By the way, before anybody gets the idea of lambasting him - he's not the maker. Just maybe the sap who bought the knife originally and is just repeating the exact wording from the original auction.
"Jason Jacobs" has been making decent money off these Pakistani blades for quite some time. Frankly, in some way I admire his business acumen.

You don't look at ebay much, do you? That is far from a record.

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

Only two "bidders," both with low feedback. Which one is the shill, or are they both shills?

BRL...

I probably have more time on ebay than most people here. There have been very few times a Pakistani blade has sold for more than $250.00 - very few - I have only seen it once - a Pakistani sword that sold several years ago for $300.00.

Again this is not the maker - I doubt those are shill bids - just uninformed buyers.

By moving this here, you deny most forumites the opportunity for the education that will keep them from making this kind of costly mistake.
I recently posted about kit knives and you or another moderator in your allmighty wisdom decided to move that thread to another obscure forum.

This is a mistake and you are doing the forumites here a disservice.

Jason Jacobs has been around for many years. If I am not mistaken, his current company is Silver Stag Custom Knives. He has been using premade blades for as long as I can remember.

Buyer beware.

Yes, Mr. Jacobs is quite the huckster. He's a boisterous fellow with the uncanny ability to attract mobs to his show tables much the way feces attracts flies. I've seen his knives fetch decent prices on eBay, but up close they are terribly fitted and finished hunks of garbage with horrible grinds and, apparently, are made from some sort of steel substitute.

There was a time that his knives were listed as having CPM-420 blades, but now they are supposedly made from either 440C or 1095. Who knows?

From the ones I have seen, I have to agree that the fit & finish was pretty poor. Most of the grinds were already on the blades when he bought them, so I didn't find them to be bad.

averageguy, i appreciate your post as my knowledge of custom knives is low.
however, i disagree with your belief that this forum will limit it's exposure. far from being "obscure", this forum is composed of authorative core material. it is an essential part of my education and i am sure of good proportion of bladeforum members. those who do not follow this forum can educate themselves the slow expensive way. roland

Worse junk than that sells for higher prices regularly on ebay, as those who read this forum are well aware.

Discussion of Bladeforums policy belongs in BladeForums.com Service and Support. Briefly, if we consolidated everything at Bladeforums into one forum posts would stay on the front page for a minute or two at best. We divide everything up into multiple forums so members can find the posts they're interested in.

"Worse junk than that sells for higher prices regularly on ebay, as those who read this forum are well aware."

While there is plenty of junk selling on ebay for high prices - it's not worse and it's not Pakistani.

I am one of those who reads these forums and am well aware.

What I offerred here and in my post on kit blades very much qualifies as general knife information.
I am not asking for any identification nor are these collector blades.

These forums where these posts have been moved to are not often frequented - especially this one. The GBU forum generally looks to identify specific individuals or outlets.

This is just general information that newbies should be aware of - in fact they should be stickies at the top of the General forum so new members can receive some benefit from this forum immediately.

It was suggested in an email that I have not shown enough courtesy for the moderator here - I'm not sure where that came from.

I saw some posts by valleytinmorks - talk about lack of respect for the moderators or appreciation of these forums.
I guess it's because he's a platinum member - but most of you guys actually apologized to him later - WTF??

You pictures are probably too good, I would take lessons from this guy in flash photography and increase your chances of finding suckers on ebay.

averageguy,

I'm a gold member and I only visit three or four forums - one of which is this one. Basically, if the moderator hadn't moved your post, I would have been less informed about the potential ebay scammer and very much less imposed upon by your rant about less readership.

As someone who reads virtually all posts in this forum, I would agree with the moderator who moved the post here. This forum is about the true identification of knives - including exposures of frauds. Something your post began with but now has degenerated into an unneeded complaint about moderation...

For one I would just like to say: "Thank you mods for your uncompensated dedication and work!"

Yes, that's certainly worth a sticky. Maybe on the whining forum.

I saw some posts by valleytinmorks ...

The difficulties he got himself into have been resolved, and trying to get him in trouble all over again doesn't contribute anything to this discussion.

By the way, if I recall correctly the "obscure forum" that averageguy complains his post about makers trying to pass off kit knives as customs was moved to was TGB&U. That sure is an obscure forum....

While a couple of you may frequent this forum regularly - the numbers indicate this forum gets few page views.

Cougar - you would do well to organize your thoughts into one post rather than three one liners. GBU is well frequented -
however as I pointed out earlier it focuses on specific individuals and outlets.
It does not have the wide readership of the general forum merely a high number of posts.

You asserted twice I was in error when in fact you are the one who has erred. That is in fact a record price for a Pakistani blade.

You have now taken it upon yourself to move this thread to an even more obscure forum where this information will not be disseminated. I don't see the benefit to the forum or the members in that.

I would bet the vast majority of page views here are due solely to the link from the general forum. - because that's where it's going to get seen.

The issues with VTW were resolved because he whined like a stuck pig and you guys didn't show enough character to put him in his place. It was in fact the rudest tone I have ever seen taken on this forum. Supported by the Busse crowd - who apparently gets good deals from him and who consist of any number of paying members - virtually all of you chose to back down.

Averageguy, you can complain until the moon turns blue . . . but I will only say that if you don't like the way this has been handled, you might consider staying on topic and leaving it at that.

I think your original post had merit - obviously this guy has some ability to doctor up a repro Paki Gill Hibben with poor pictures and some potential shilling. IIRC ebay does have a message system so you can direct questions to the seller. It has had an effect on some sales - there has been some outrageous stuff out there over the years, stolen knives, fakes, put togethers, etc. Usually the guys who point these out have made a serious effort to protect the public from apparent fraud.

In this case, an import reseller or modifier is kinda small time - especially with suspect bidding. These guys will probably never go away - like lot lizards at truck stops - so it's going to be a pretty frustrating quest to rid ebay of them. I doesn't make you wrong to point it out, but dragging in the off topic stuff is asking a lot of us who did want to understand your complaint. I feel like I got hooked into a bait and switch.

Not trying to be a moderator - just a viewer who thinks you might need to hear the other side.

Excuse me? The buck with that mess stopped with me, and I made my decision here - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4544487&postcount=87

I furthermore stated that if people don't like it, they can feel free to hit the road -
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4544653&postcount=90

and reiterated things here -
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4547083&postcount=145

If someone's right and we (as a moderator staff) are wrong, I have no problems saying so. That doesn't excuse their own childish behavior.

VTW got whiny over a 1 point infraction and decided to make a huge mess over it. He wasn't kept on here "because he offers good deals" or anything commercial, but he was given lenience since he is a decent member of the community.
