Greetings, I have an older estwing hatchet with a handle that is looking pretty sorry. Its the stacked leather type and I would like to replace it with something else. Any ideas on what and how?
thanks
josh

jd,There should be two long pins holding the stacked leather on.At the bottom of the handle there is a metal plate which show the two peened pin heads.Just force this plate up and cut the heads or file them off and everything should slide out the bottom.
Then go back w/ what ever you desire.Stacked micarta, antler, bone, ect..Then when finished put the plate on last peen the heads back and sand the spacers as desired.
You'll have a unique hatchet.DM

Thanks for the reply. I like the micarta slabs on my knife. Can you recomend a source and do you have to buy standard slabs and cut them down and shape them? Also would it be worth it to epoxy all of them together to the handle before doing the peening? I'm also thinking a nice parkerization job might look good on it too.
Thanks,
Josh

Josh,Sheffield Knifemakers Supply (there are many) should carry everything you need.
Realize,w/ that hatchet its a stacked affair not slabs. You have to purchase sheets and cut them down into disc. Then stack them on and shape.Do not epoxy until the final step.
If you want slabs I suppose you could wield bar stock to the shaft and cover that w/ micarta slabs. If you want parkerized it must be done after the leather is off and before the micarta is on.This will be a good project and that axe cuts well. So, their worth owning.DM
