I've reworked a ball pien hammer to help me work my bevels during the forging process.

What's the best way to reharden it? My plan was hydraulic oil. I also have brine.

I it was a cheap hammer - probably made in China, so who knows! I figured brine was a bad idea and would probably cause it to crack.

I also have some goop that has old kitchen oil, hydraulic fluid and I think some mineral oil. It's nasty. It will probably cool it the slowest of the three.

Did you get this hammer at Harbor Freight? I had one from there and was using it to peen the end of a tang. I must have hammered on it for 5 minutes and nothing was happening. I looked at the ball and it was all mashed up. I'm not sure if you can even get it to harden up. I'd try water since I don't think oil will make any difference.
