Rekat's mod ified D-2

I don't have a lot of experience with this steel yet. I just received and started playing with the Pikuni.

However, if you were to pick up the newest issue of Tactical Knives(TK) (or Blade, I can't remember...sorry) there is a good review of a Carnivour with the D2 Modified steel. It got IMO a very good review. Seems to hold up well to various conditions and holds/keeps a good edge. Just read the article to find out more, 'cuz I don't remember quite enough to help you.

Jeff Randal just published an article in the most recent Tactical Knives where he stated that he thinks modified D-2 is a major step up from current stainless steels. He was testing a D-2M REKAT Carnivore. He said the D-2M was more corrosion resistant than VG-10!

Awesome stuff if this is the case!

Haven't any of you noticed that pretty much everything "gets a good review" in magazines like Tactical Knives, etc.? I mean come on, I've read glowing reviews of Junglee/Guttmann products in there, which are basically a notch or two up from Pakistani POS if you ask me. I personally like Cliff Stamp's reviews, because they are true, unbiased reviews, but I'd bet that TK would lose significant ad revenue if they had people like him doing the reviewing...

Mr44: you're right. However, what I care about is that two excellent metalsmiths right here on BF have examined the stuff and pronounced it cool: Rob Simonich and Darrel Ralph.

I trust their opinions way ahead of the paper rags.

As soon as I can, I'm ordering a Sifu in D2-M so I can retire old #1 as a carry piece

I agree with you about TK in general, but Jeff Randal is one of the best contributors they have.

My opinion is pretty much that premium steel is premium steel, and as long as the maker knows how to heat treat, I don't place much importance on the differences. But modified D-2 definitely seems to belong in the premium cutlery steel category.
