Sorry for the novel I've typed here guys

Ok so I am pretty sure that I am going to be buying an Ak variant some time in the next couple of months and at some point I want to replace the stock, wooden fore grip (the wooden area around the barrel and gas tube) and maybe the pistol grip and I also want to get a Beryl/Krebs style rail for going over the receiver to mount an optic of some sort. Since I have multiple questions I will mark them as number 1 2 3 4 and so on, only a couple I don't want to take half of the G&G forum here with different posts.

1. this is the one that is kind of not really bothering me but just have a hard time deciding on, Aimpoint or EOtech or for the rifle I am getting (around a $570 AK type rifle) should I just get some kind of Bushnell Holosight (EOtech clone with a far lower battery life I think) which is around $250. I am kind of leaning towards the Aimpoint because in a video of Nutnfancy's he mentioned that the Aimpoint was lighter came with watertight lens caps and had a longer battery life than the EOtech's but you have to buy a mount for the Aimpoints so that bumps the price of the Aimpoint over the EOtech a little depending on which model. Models I am interested in are the Aimpoint M2 and the EOtech M510 both are around the same price.

2. this one is short and sweet. I am looking at the Tapco T6 M4 style 6 position stock for the AK. Install seems to be pretty easy but if anyone has any experience or negative things about this stock or know of some better ones for the rifle I am getting then tell me please (I want an AR but I am getting the AK first unless I come across a really good deal on an AR)

3. last question I promise. I have asked this before but would a Beryl/Krebs style railhttp://dpharms.com/beryl-style-scope-mount-p-230.html work better than a side mount rail http://dpharms.com/ak-side-mount-with-double-rails-mnt973-p-302.html. I want the optic what ever it maybe to be close to my eye like a standard scope than the typical scout setup that you usually see with the sight on a quad rail setup on the fore end.

I apologize if I have put you to sleep reading this guys but any answers would be appreciated.

Oh and one last one if any of you guys know of a good muzzle brake I might think about putting one on if I can.

My .223 AK is one of those WASR models from Romania. The wood stocks it came with looked like crap so I replaced them with Bulgarian-styled (USA made) sythetic stocks in the BLOC "plum" color from K-VAR and now it looks great.

Another site for AK goodies you might to check out is Ultimak.

You'll want to use as many American-made parts/accessories on your AK as possible because those boys in the BATF believe your AK is more likely to commit a crime if it has too many foreign parts.

Yeah I was looking at the Ultimak site and maybe going with the scout style sight with it up around the barrel and gas tube.

Here's my AK with the K-VAR plum colored stock set:

OOH nice I like that. Yeah I am going to replace the standard wood stock set with a composite set.

If you are new to AK's or haven't ever changed the stock on one, don't sweat it. It's super easy to do and the only tools you need are a drill (you have to drill the guide holes for the screws on the new buttstock) and a wrench (the heat shield on the gas piston tube is literally wrenched on this is way and comes off the same way; it looks a lot harder to do than it actually is). You may or may not need to trim down the 'tang' on the new buttstock. The composite material is some sort of fiberglass/nylon stuff so this is also simple to do. I just filed mine down a wee bit with a file. It only took me about 20 minutes to do it all, and it was my first time too.

The plum color looks cool doesn't it? When I bought it I was originally going to buy a stock set in OD green but they were sold out. I bought the plum instead and I'm glad I did. IMO it actually blends in better in the woods around here.

The plum makes it kind of look like a wood set but with the advantages of a composite. And yeah I guess that the thing I am kind of worried about is getting some good parts for it when I do go to modify it. But I know that if I spend the money on good parts then I will get good quality but yeah the installation thing is new to me at least on AK's being that I have never had one.

I have an EoTech, and other than the reduced battery life, it has been great. It's really personal preference.

I'd suggest a standard or metal folding stock rather than the adjustable style.

i very much prefer the old std wire folding stock to any of the AR style ones, the wire folders make the rifle a lot shorter and easier to handle and they just look right, imho the AR style collapsibles on an AK just look "funky", the best wire folders are the east german or the polish ones, they are getting hard to find and kinda high $$ when ya find them($100 or so) though, but they are my fav for a folder on an AK.

FWIW my opinion is if ya want an AR style collapsible stock get an AR.

i also dont care for the underfolders, but i like them better than AR style collapsibles, as flimsy as they are, i guess i am a traditionalist when it comes to AK's lol.

i have a romanian AK74 with a polish folding stock & b-square side rail mount with an aimpoint and its a really handy rifle for carrying when i am riding around my property in johson city on my buds 4 wheeler & works pretty well on hogs and such, i bet its only a couple of feet long w/the stock folded.

also eotech is a good site, i have one on an AR, i do like aimpoints a bit better though, but both are good.

I went the third route:

The plum set on that .223 AK is the one with the longer NATO length stock. It made a huge difference for me and IMO was a definite improvement.

Yeah SIFU1A I am leaning towards the LaRue Iron Dot instead of the EOtech or Aimpoint because of the much better co witness and it is lower profile, lighter and cheaper. And it is LaRue so it has to be good.

if i could start over the irondot is the way i would go, of course when i started with the desire to put optics on an AK (8 or 10 yrs ago) not many folks had optics on an AK and options were limited, i never thought anyone would figure out how to fit one low enough to co-witness the irons, larue had a good idea imho, i plan to get at least one myself before too long, but hey my son just started college and man tuition is high now lol,

and hey larue is almost a neighbor to us in georgetown.

whatever ya do dont get one of those railed reciever covers, they suck, i'd give ya a deal on one if ya are intersted.

i had a '74 style brake on my maahdi for a while but eventually put the old slant brake back on, mostly because it was shorter and while i have heard the '74 brakes work really well on full auto mine isnt full auto and i dont think it made much difference on mine for semi,

i wanted to put a '74 style brake on my romanian '74 but on mine ya have to replace the front sight base with one made for a brake and those were impossible to find at most any price for quite a while, the threads are different than on other AK's, now ya can get the front sight base and no one has the brake, go figure, so anyway that one is on hold now.

I would have to say with everything you want to do to your AK, the stock, scope mount, etc....you would be better off buying the AR to start with. The DPMS Sportical has been selling for 800.00 on gunbroker and other places. While that is 230 higher than the Ak you mentioned buy the time you added the mods to your AK you would have been better off with the AR.

Tapco makes good quality goods and everything I have heard about their customer service has been good as well. When it comes to a scope mount ideally you want the mount and the barrel to be mounted to the same piece of steel so a receiver mount would be best.

Na I do think that the Iron Dot is the way I am going to go and I wonder if they have a shop set up in Georgetown where you can buy the Iron Dot directly from them?

I'd get an AK with a folding stock which the AR can't use.
AK+Folding stock=sweet.
AK+collapsible stock=crap.
JMHO.

I am looking more at the folding stocks because they are starting to grow on on me. What are some good folding AK stocks out there.

Not sure, only handled fixed so far. Want to get an Ace/Tromix. Tapco also makes some. I even saw a folding collapsible stock, if that wets your whistle.
