So, am I nuts, or does the outdoor activity stop during the summer and pick up round about now?

I go to the stores and the sporting goods sections are buzzing where they've been dead all summer. All the fishing baits I like are harder to find at the Academy.

Am I going to really enjoy the winter?

Do people fish all year here?

shotgunner, when it gets and stays real hot back home, folks do have a tendency to stay out of the heat. About this time of the year, as the temperatures start "moderating" a little, folks sort of come back to life and start getting out again, fishing and what-not. Now some of us hardy souls don't let the temperature bother us that much. And, yes, folks do fish almost all year round, and yes. you're going to like winters in Texas!

Ron (who lives about 80 miles up US 290 from you!)

same out here in the central valley in CA. right now it's starting to pick up a bit, people are getting itchy.

People adapt to the climate. A few years ago my wife and I were looking at purchasing a waterfront condo in South Florida around Christmas time. As the agent was walking us around the pool area I commented that it was strange that nobody was outside enjoying the warm afternoon. She said that it was winter down there and many of the locals considered it too cold to be out. (It was probably around 80° F!)

I grew up in the Middle East and was amused seeing the Saudi guards at the US Embassy wearing wool overcoats and shivering if the temperature ever dropped into the 70s! Later, I moved to another desert, Los Angeles, and was so used to the heat that I could walk to work in a 3-piece suit in 100°+ July heat and not break into a sweat. Now that I've moved to Seatle, 80° seems hot.

Yeah, its about time to start seeing people outside again, now that the temps arent in the 100's anymore. Enjoy our winter, while it lasts, it will be hot again before you know it. And thats the weather from up here in Georgetown.

Yes, we had some record highs this summer. The heat and mosquitos tend to slow down the outdoor activities. It is just no fun to camp in this heat. And the drought really hurt the lakes and rivers. Spring and Fall are the most active seasons here and winter is down right fun. It only really gets cold in January and February, and even those months are prone to 70 degree days.

Favorite fishing baits should be stocked and stored if possible.

Welcome to Texas.

If nothing else, you will enjoy (from a safe distance) an ice storm's aftermath in traffic in Texas. It is a cross between a demolition derby, a hockey game, and a motorized mass escape from an asylum.

Lived two years in Longview, comuted up towards Daingerfield and the like. GREAT folks, but scary drivers. You were "new" unless they knew what your grandparents did to get kept after school in third grade. :)

yeah...now things are going to pick up some, heat & humidity just sucks the life out of ya....now that the weather is starting to cool off here shortly Outdoor activities will pick up for me anyways !!!

What's winter? ;) There are two seasons in Texas; Summer & not-Summer.

Seriously, get ready for the best time of year in Texas. Oct, Nov, & Dec are perfect; mild temperatures, turning leaves, just the right amount of rain (usually).

OTOH, remember what they say about Texas weather: if you don't like it, wait a few minutes.

And also, welcome to Texas. :)

Yup, temps have dropped a bit but don't let your guard down, we'll very likely still see some HOT! I hate heat, I'm a reverse hibernator, soon as the temps start passing 85 or so my life moves indoors.

But, it's dove season, so fall can't be too far around the corner!

Yup, I remember the best time to fish for LargeMouth was from Dec to March when I lived in Florida.

Enjoy bro!

Shotgunner...I grew up a few miles from where you are now and yes, the temps are way too hot to fish in the summer, but generally stay moderate all "winter" long. So expect to be able to fish into early Dec.

Being in your neighborhood, I'll tell you that going outdoors requires less water and other breaks this time of year.

You could also try the Gander Mt on 45, I just got a few spinner baits on sale.

orrey...let's not forget about Bass Pro on I-10. It's worth making the drive at least once if you take a few hundred and just load up...and where is the Gander on 45? I only know of the one on 1960-290.

Oh yeah I forgot about the Bass Pro in Katy. I haven't been there in a long while, guess I need to head out there sometime soon.

The Gander is on 45 south of Louetta around Holzworth(?). I just found out about the one on 290, seems like everyone else goes to that one.

Oh...ok...since I am from Tomball and still go home for family stuff it's good info to have

Out in my neck of the woods, I head over to the Cabela's in Buda, south of Austin. Haven't made it to Gander Mountain or Bass Pro yet. But now that I'm leaving this line of work, I should have more time to do so!

Ron

Thanks. 80 miles, thats right around the corner in Texas distance.

Nope, its not 80 miles, its about an Hour and A half(depending on whether its HW or Interstate). In my neck of Texas, we measure by hours instead of miles.

For some reason in Tyler(E Tex), we don't enjoy these 70 degree winters. We get 30-40 degrees with high humidity, so the cold gets to your bones. I was at the post office one day and over heard 3 people complaining about how cold it is here. They were Natives of Denver, Wyoming and Boston(respectively).

But I enjoy every minute of it. At its coldest you see me running around in Shorts, a hoodie and usually a Ushanka(I shave my head). For some reason my legs don't get cold.

Man, I came here from Jersey, we were in the 20's and teens with dips below zero for most of the winter. Average around 90 most of the summer with "heat waves" into the hundreds.

I won't miss the variation. I will miss the leaves falling and the snow.

As for Gander Mnt., I call that "home". My wife hates it, I go there every time we pass it. I live about 5 miles down Louetta in the "Champions" area.

Still trying to get used to this subdivision thing. Spring is so big, back in Jersey, I told people what town I lived in and that was good enough.
