It's photo time!

I'm taking this baby to Blade with me. Everybody's got to do a little show and tell and there's nothing like showing your own stuff (and then having other knifemakers laugh at you hysterically :D )

Full Specs:

OAL = 11 5/8"

Blade:
Hidden Tang
Carbon Steel, ~RC60
6 3/4"
"almost convex" edge

Handle:
4 7/8" combo
Moose antler
Brass and vulc. paper spacers
Finish: at least 1 coat of every method I know...

Sheath = 3 layers
4oz. Calf skin liner
6oz. Gold tanned Stingray Skin "inlay"
4oz. Calf skin "trim"

The trim was distressed using various "tools" :D and then dyed with British tan antiquing dye.

The whole thing was dipped in an elixir of parafin and mink oil, dried and buffed to help "age" it.

The intention of this whole knife is two-fold:

1 - be a real "user"
2 - look like a real "user"

Everything locks up real tight and is very solid.

Most interesting factoid about the sheath:

The stingray is so tough I had to cut it with the bandsaw!

Anyway, enough talk...

Here's the first pic:

(I got a feeling Yvsa might like this one...)

Dwayne (Leatherman on bfc) helped me with the sheath idea - thanks, buddy!

I'm really starting to like this one. So much so, that I want to get rid of it. (does anybody out there understand?)

I can't bring myself to sell this thing for 2 reasons:

1 - there's no way I could sell this for a profit, even if I discounted the labor to zero.

2 - there's no fun in sell, now is there?

So, an idea struck on my mind:

How about a passaround?

If I get enough folks interested, I'll go for it. Otherwise, this one will end up in somebody's Christmas stocking (maybe yours!) :D

You be feeling right Uwinv!!!! I likeyed it from the first I saw of it!!!!! :D :D :D :D

What about the sheath? I love the way it's "weathered"...reminds me of the wisdom you can see in the eyes and faces of the elders.

If I'm included on a passaround for that one, I'll cheat. And what ever else is necessary to keep it from going away. Nicest one I've seen in a long time, Dan.

From the first view of that knife, I fell in love!

It is perhaps the most beautiful (to my taste) of any I've seen.

The sheath is well-done...but the knife is....what a knife should be.

Do NOT include me in the pass-around. The pictures are painful enough.

They will rave at the Blade show!

be safe.

Wow! That sheath came out nice!! Good work! Looks like your on the way to becoming a well rounded maker. Nothing like a sole authorship from beginning to end eh? That ray skin is some tough stuff, I had some fits with the skin I used recently for a project. Its all those calcic nodes in the skin, its literally filled with rocks!

I wanna closer look at that one, please include me in the passaround:D

and thanks fer sharin! That'd make a good karda for my...:)

You could always keep it under the guise of a "work in progress." Continue to refine your detailing skills, like say, fileworking the spine, blueing or etching the blade (oe course!)or perhaps a bit of chiselled steel, wire inlay, scrimshaw on the handle...I'm sure you can think of a good reason to keep working...:)

Awesome stuff.

Keith

That's ray skin? For some reason I had thought it was snake (perhaps surpressed memories from past experiences). But having worked with ray skin myself (only once, and I dont think Id ever do it again unless I absotutely had too), I can say Im really really impressed Pen. Wow. :D

WOW!!! I am definately up for a passaround if that happens. I don't think any other knifemakers would find anything at all laughable about that piece Dan. It is a beauty.

WOW indeed! That's terrific work, Pen. Congratulations on a job well done. No one at Blade will laugh at that one. I'm in on any passaround.

I have the best idea - as us poor lads in the uk cannot be involved in any pass arounds I think you should send it to me Pen, I am just sarting my knife making career and I need inspiration - since I have fallen in love with this knife it seems only right.

hehe

:D

No, seriously Pen - that is one very nice rig. I only hope that I will be able to produce something of that quality in a few years time. I wouldn't think any knife maker would laugh at that, 10 out 10 bud !!

It just keeps getting better, every time we see it!

Is "sole authorship" some kind of flatfish joke?:p

I love this thing. The handle, blade, and sheath are all perfect. Great work Pen.
