Remember when we didn't wear sunscreen?

It comes back to haunt you!

I've posted this on other forums as some of you have seen but here it is.

A few weeks back I had a basal cell carcinoma removed from my left ear. I'm fine but I post this as a warning. It kinda looks like I got into the ring with Mike Tyson. :D

I've made a habit of wearing a wide brimmed hat, but now I'll be putting on 50 SPF sunscreen to cover the high spots also. If you have fair skin and red or fair blonde hair, please do the same.

"Yeah, 20 years ago we didn't use that pussy shit."

Glad to heat it worked out for the best for you. We've got a family member right now battling a tough battle with skin cancer right now. He's almost at the limit of the amount of chemo they'll use on him so we'll see how it works out.

I tend to use a fair amount of sun tan lotion if I'm going to be out all day long in the sun. I'm anal about putting lotion on my tattoos so I normally just put it all over me.

Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for the warning, but I'll be damned if I put cat crap on my ears!;)

Glad that you're alright. My 1 year old gets slathered with sunscreen on a regular basis. An ounce of prevention...

I had basal cell carcinoma removed from my right eyebrow a few months ago. I've had more blistering sunburns than I care to think about; these days I wear more sunscreen than you can cut with a knife!

Glad to hear your OK! My dad almost died from melanoma in his late 20's(is now 51), so needless to say our family takes the utmost precaution(especially me being the only blonde hair/blue eyed member)

From what I've gathered, melanoma is the number 1 fatal cancer. It pays to be careful.

Yes the sun definitely isn't something to mess around with. While to me, tan really does look better, I still urge my friends(girlfriends, friends that are girls, and even some guys ) that it really isn't worth it, and show them the crater on my dads back. As far as the number one fatal cancer, last time I heard it was number two, behind only pancreatic cancer

You chose a great survival topic, rzwieg, that most outdoors persons give very little consideration to -- especially if they are young and healthy (when they most need to think about it!).

I, too, have had skin cancer taken off my cheek earlier this year. So has my younger brother (middle 40's). No one in our family has ever had ANY TYPE of cancer before. What few realize is, the damaging effects of the suns rays are accumulative. Skin cancer does not happen overnight. With over one million new cases of skin cancer this year, already, in the U.S., it would seem to be a subject that more people would give more thought to.

My dermatologist is also an avid outdoorsman (backpacker and fisherman). He makes it very clear to his patients, young and old alike, that "you just aren't thinkin' straight these days if you go into the outdoors without a hat and SPF protection." Yep, he got on my case. :)

BTW, all in my family have dark eyes, hair, and no light skin. We are all big, healthy, more active than most (lots of athletes), however skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma) is no respecter of persons as I understand it.

I go NOWHERE without wearing a daily "complete defense SPF" of at least 30 on my face. A wide brimmed hat is part of that protection. Baseball caps, as much as I love them, are useless against the suns damaging effects.

Yep, unfortunately, guys like Bear Grylls are going to be seeing A LOT of their dermatologists in the future. Then, survival might not be so easy. :)

As you can read, the latest theory is that sun screen may not stop all the bad radiation:

There's more out there to the same effect from reputable sources.

I, too, have been carved on, the wages of pale skin, western sun, and stooooopid.

At least when my doc approaches with the twice-a-year liquid nitrogen, he spills no BS. Instead, "This is going to hurt a lot."

I just heard a doctor on Fox news the other day that said sun screen causes more problems that it will ever cure. According to him it blocks the natural Vitamin D that we only get from the sun. It's worse he says, if you live in Northern climates where they don't get as much sun light. Don't know if he is right or not. I have never touched sun screen in my life.

Doctor's can say some crazy things...I heard a surgeon a few weeks ago say that allergies weren't a physical ailment, but psychological, being caused by a traumatizing event in your childhood. Now I am no doctor, but come on, that's some real BS. I never heard much about sunscreen blocking Vitamin D uptake, but if it's true I am in trouble. I'll take that over chemo any day

Thomas, I didn't feel a thing...But..

Me: Doc, it sounds like yer peelin an apple.

Dr: Yeah the bad part is you can hear it.

Me: That's what, six stitches?

:D

PB:Now is the best time for your little one.

Save for driving, I've taken to staying out of the sun at mid day and have for several years. Still, time in the sun takes it's toll.

I hope he's doing better. Cancer, of any kind, is a shitty way to go.
