Reminder for us OGs....

We just got to remember to keep our "Welcome and Helpful" hats on as this community goes through this crazy growth spurt.

You nailed it.

As some folks here know, I bought a skateboard or two and started riding with my son.
Now this was nothing new; I rode a board for ten years or more as a youngster. But I have started lurking and posting a bit over at a longboard forum.
Posting less now though, because those folks (many of them teenagers) can be total asshats and more than unwelcoming.
The place really does make you feel like you can't ask a question without a 1000 page search.

Screw that. If someone asks a question that has already been addressed, please answer if you can and gently point them in the direction of the Search function and the blade database.

Doe's any of this mean I have to be less crabby, smile more and be nice to dogs and children? I'm not sure I can compromise my core values.

Suddenly, the world is starting to see what we've known about for a long time, and new people are showing up every day to learn more about Becker.

People new to Becker had to have had a favorite knife before, so there are bound to be inevitable "I think this is better" type stuff.

I've been here a while and still think my stuff is better. :p

[Ducking for the onslaught.:D]

You learn fast. Normally I'd give Clich shit about the BK5 (not a fan) but since he is chiching my PB....THE BK5 RULEZ!!!!

Yeh you better watch your tongue or your potbelly might come back as a bk5. That'll learn ya. Now quit bellyaching and get back to insulting each other already. :D

Tanner, I went back and re-read your OP. With all due respect, I agree with what you are saying, but I feel like posting it at all implies the OGs have somehow greeted our new members with something less than a warm welcome. Someone just dropping in could draw that conclusion from reading it. We have excellent moderators and I feel certain (if that were the case) they would step in to stop any rough treatment. That may not be what your intention was, but it does imply it. I think your heart is in the right place, I just don't think a lecture was needed to stem a trend of newb abuse. I just haven't seen it here. This place is about as good natured as it gets anywhere on the net.

"This isn't stemming from any one thing or person or event. Just something that occured to me today"

All I was saying is that in the past, on occasion people get agitated with repetitive questions, if only because they've been here longer. But we've never had such a huge influx of people as we are having now, and I'm betting a lot of those types of posts are going to start flying in like never before. We used to pick up new members in a trickle, now it's a flood.

I'm going to try and take a break for a bit. I think some are starting to get "Tannered-out". A few more weeks and my wife will be off for the summer and I wont be stuck at home on the internet so much driving people nuts.

Just don't want anybody wandering in to get the wrong impression T. I'm not the least bit Tannered out. Hang in there man, and I really do appreciate and agree with your sentiment.

Place is going to be dead without you man :D. I get what your laying down. Kinda like someone asks what our favorite becker is. That one comes up alot and you can hear the eye rolls. I get it. I will continue to treat the noobs, ansd their questions, with the utmost disdain and disrespect. They gotta learn sometime :D. Jk of course.

This is how I feel about a lot of you :)

Me too. Look forward to meeting you at the gathering!

I think the OP was accurate.

Believe me, I know how it is reading the same kinds of posts over and over again, but the thing is, people come here with a desire to converse with folks, not just read and read and read. That's the fun of it, or to me it is.

Its just a normal growing pain that the forum is experiencing. Folks that have been here a couple of years, get comfortable, and have an inside track that the noobs don't. Inside jokes, inside snarks, hell, some folks might think me and Murph hate each other (I plan on snuffing his ass as the Gathering by the way) but really, we are quite friendly to one another.

Murph's a tool, and you just have to know that.

If someone comes on the forum the first time, they don't know that Murph is a tool, and would think that my treatment of him and his lame posts are the normal treatment here, and won't post up because of it.

:D

Now, back to the fun, that's why we are here anyways.

I am one of the a fore mentioned new recruits. As one of the newest class of inductees into Beckerheadsmanship, I will try to uphold the values and traditions that I have learned over the past few weeks of lurking, posting, and generally enjoying this site. I hope I can make the OG's proud to have me and not have Moose riddled with PM's about banning me. :D

I enjoy the forum because it is diametrically apposed to most all pther forums you come across. The OG seem genuinely excited when someone new posts his or her excitement and experinces with his new Becker, as long as there are photos. :p They don't blast the person because they do not have the newest knot on their lanyard or the hippest scales. That is truly a rarity online sadly. It seems other places thing "You are not as great as the greatest, and even then, he wasn't that good." Here it seems everyone treats everyone like they would if they were sitting next to them. Have fun, give a hard time to the ones that need a good ribbing, enjoy the people around you and make friends that you want to come back and talk to tomorrow. I hope that this feeling stays through all the growth spurts that are sure to come. That is why I was honestly excited to become a Beckerhead. I feel it's an honor, not just given.

Oh and Tanner, please don't stay gone too long. I don't know what I will do if I don't have someone else to post what I was thinking too. haha

Thanks Mr. Becker, OG's, and all the people that make this place such a great oasis.
