Nothing fancy, but one of the things I always thought about getting and just never did. The Case Mini Trapper has always been one of my favorites, and the 1178 fits the same size, so it should make a good edc.

Nice one, Mike. How about some specs (and year of manufacture, if known)?
Can't go wrong with a "Bullet"!

(Seems we were in a similar state of mind today. See my Winchester thread posted just a minute or two ago...:cool:)

My knowledge of the Rems is very limited Elliott. The knife is dated 1990 and the closed length is suppose to be 3 5/8 inches. IIRC, this era is made by Camillus. I can't remember for sure, but I think the Camillus knives had a different steel than some that were made in 440

I don't have it in hand yet. I just picked it up, so it should be here mid week. Even though its nothing out of the ordinary, I am excited about getting it, and didn't want to wait, so I borrowed the sellers pic. :D

I just looked at your Winchester pics right after I posted this one. Thats a beauty. I really like the pattern and size
With all this talk of Winchester and Remington, I have the urge to go shooting today :D

Thanks, Mike. Same size as the Winchester. Should be a great carry for you.
Yeah, we were both tuned into the classics today.

Eish......Mike that is a nice one! I love the beautiful caramel handles.
Very nice score bud:)

Thanks Steven. The scale material reminds me a lot of the older Uncle Henrys. Heck, its probably the same stuff.
From the little research I've done, these were prone to cracking. Especially around the lanyard hole. This one was listed as having no cracks, so we shall see :D

Very nice, Mike. Great size for EDC. I really like the shape of the spey blade on that one.

I have a new Remington slippie coming (tomorrow, I hope). Pics to follow, of course.

Thanks Todd. Definitely post some pics of your new one when it arrives.
What model did you get ?

I have one of those. A 1991 model with a crack at the scale pin on the blade side of the mark side scale. I don't see it being a problem with EDC and I didn't purchase it as a collector. The blades weren't sharp and it took me a while on the hones to bring it to the sharpness I wanted, but it is very sharp now and is a good size for carrying in your hunting pants pocket. The steel is stainless but I don't think that is going to be a problem; it seems to have a good heat treat as far as I can tell subjectively and takes a good edge after getting the profile right.

The older brother of the 1178 was the 1173 that was the second release (1983) of the Delrin Series of the Bullet reproductions that started in 1982. The knives and the posters that you could get with them were a highly anticipated yearly issue. The original posters are every bit as cool as the knives and in a lot of cases worth more than the knives that were issued. Can't help but like the patterns that were produced. Good pic 33 !

I have 3 of the Camillus made 1178 Bullet Repro. It's my favorite pattern of the series, along with the 1173 from 1983 which is the same knife, different handle 'jigging'. (is it really "jigging" when made by pouring into a mold ?) Great in-hand feel and very inexpensive on ebay. ( ~ $20-25).
I'm sure you'll like it.

I'll be ready to give it a little edge work when it arrives. Heck, thats part of the fun of getting a new knife :D I too didn't buy mine to collect. Its going to see some pocket time. I'm not sure why the Rems had so much problem cracking. The Stagalon on the Uncle Henrys don't seem to have the same issues. When looking at them on line, it seems a bigger portion of them note that there is cracking. Either around the top pins or around the lanyard holes

Thanks Greg. I do like the posters. I'm sure most of the ones I have seen were reproductions, but still cool.
It would have been great to be collecting them back then, anticipating the yearly release.
I have some original Remington and Winchester gun posters from years ago. When I was still collecting old Winchesters, I was always on the lookout for vintage Winchester memorabilia. They still packed away, but I have an old Winchester hatchet and axe.
When we moved 4 years ago, I carefully packed them, and they are still in the box. One of these days I should get them back out. I'm sure the wife will be thrilled

Thanks Roland, I am excited to get it. Good question on the "jigging". I guess as long as the end result is to replicate jigging, it could still be considered jigging.
Even though there is no actual jigging process done to the scales.

I think I still have a few of the 1982 issues in the clam shell box hangin' around somewhere and a few of the posters from different years. I'll try and get some pics. The 1178 and 1173 patterns are one of my favorites.

Thanks Greg. That would be great. I'd like to see them.

Nice knife! It's rare to see one of those without the crack at the lanyard hole. I have one of the 1173s, which of course has the crack. GEC's #73 "Scout" is based on that one, IIRC. That's a great pattern- well, the vintage Remington pattern anyway.

Does anyone know the difference between the 1173 and the 1178 patterns? They look very similar. My 1173 has 1095 steel, IIRC.

That is a nice knife. I like the handles and the size.

I have the Full size trapper bullet knife R1128 1989 Wood handles and its heavy.

I'm not sure of the differences between the two versions, as my knowledge of Rems is very limited. I am curious too. I'll bet someone will chime in and explain. I'm curious which company made the 1173 version. I've gotten really intrigued by the Rems lately, so its time to start doin some learnin :D

Thanks. I've seen the wood scaled versions. They look nice too. I can't remember for sure, but aren't they Cocobolo ?

Mike,
It would be a great addition if you could post that picture and info in the existing Remington Bullet knife thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=523346&highlight=remington+bullet

Will do Corey. That is a great thread. Gotta go to work in a few minutes, but will add it tonight when I get home.
Even though this one is not out of the ordinary, it is good to keep that thread alive.
I have a feeling there may be a few more additions coming in the future :D

The only difference i can see is in the Delrin handles:

R1178 1991

Here it is (bottom knife) compared with the 1983 R1173

customs003-23.jpg

Now to confuse matters. Here is the 1983 R1173 (bottom knife) compared with a "second" marked "R1178" & "1991"

customs004-22.jpg

customs005-14.jpg

The "second" has no lanyard hole and is mis-marked, i think. meaning that, it is only the handles that differ between the 1983 R1173 and the 1991 R1178.
