The last # of the Remington model # usually indicates the handle material. From a guide book.
#1 Rosewood #2 Black #3 Jigged Bone #4 Pearl #5 Pyremite
#6 Stag #7 Ivory or White #8 Cocobolo #9 Metal #0 or #10 Buffalo Horn

Here is a #1 with Rosewood handle. R31 Jack that is lightly used and appears to have original edge.

Beautiful old Remington and beautiful rose wood that has aged well; thanks for sharing:thumbup:!

Here is a #2 black handle. Some kind of black composite on this R982 dog leg jack. Possibly a salesmans sample?

What years were these knives produced?
And how would you rate their quality and crafstmanship?
I love the #2 Dogleg.

All the original Remingtons like these fall into the years 1920-1940. Quality and craftsmanship was very good.

Here is #5 Pyramite. This is a Remington R3635 stockman with punch. Many original Remington punches were blue on the inside when new. Pyramite was Remingtons name for celluloid.

Handle material #7 is listed as Ivory, white bone and white pyramite. Have a look at this Remington R1477 budding knife with white pyramite. All the models I have seen that end with a 7 have been grafting, budding, and florist knives. I have seen white bone and pyramite but I have yet to see Ivory.

Handle material #9 is metal. This one is solid brass and heavy! It is a Remington R219 easy opener jack knife.
