Remington Handle Material 1-10

Last is the #0 or some books say #10. It is Buffalo horn. An example is this well used Remington R590 equal end jack with cut off pen blade. I have not seen very many Remingtons with buffalo horn and have yet to find a nice one with etched blade.

My pleasure to get a chance to show off a few Remingtons for others to enjoy also. I will throw in a picture of another metal handle but this one has no model number. Thirsty anyone??

Thanks very much for showing these knives of real quality AND character.

The Dogleg is a very unusual knife, really looks like blackwood or ebony.

The 7463 Serp Pen is outstanding. I haven't seen a knife I like so much in a long time on this forum, remarkable beauty, wonderful bone. GEC's recent 57 Half -Whitt has something of the same about it although carries a Wharncliffe master. Could you give some dimensions for that Serp Pen? Superlative Pen actually.

Best wishes, Will

Will, I was thinking that GEC has some half whitts with the clip master as well. Am I mistaken on that? Anyway, I prefer the wharncliffe main anyhow, but others maybe not.

That Remington serpentine pen is my favorite of the bunch; a little bigger and thicker than my MCH which I consider a closer relative to that knife than to a copperhead.

Interesting to me is the buff horn knife; Looks like the horn hasn't shrunk back from the bolsters any at all.

Ed, no Clips on that single-spring 57 frame, YET. The Whittler model carries a Clip or Wharncliffe master. Great knife that Half-Whitt while we're on it...

Big, you are not wrong about that Buff Horn. The key thing is the curing of horn, lengthy and skillful business evidently, without proper curing it can shrink back horribly. Lot of old horn knives show no real problems with curl or shrink, same cannot always be said of contemporary examples.

Regards, Will

The R7463 is 3 3/8 closed. It is a good one! I see a few Remingtons like it in the books with a Wharncliffe master but I have not had one in hand. Many of the old buffalo horn knives are also bug food. The little guys eat holes in them.
As you can see I collect Remingtons and the theme for the collection is handle material. That way I only need 10 knives to have a nice complete collection. When I want to display the Remingtons I put them in this case. Aint collecting fun?

I love the pricing!

Thanks for illustrating each handle material with clear, well-photographed examples.

Feel free to add pictures of other Remingtons you may have with the various handle materials.

The black handle on the R982 is composite and most of the ones I have seen are not in good shape. The stuff seems to swell a little over time instead of shrinking like most handles. Some of the #2 handles are black wood or ebony.

Nice thread, not sure how I've missed it until now! :)
