Remora Steel?

I read about loss of edge on these very forums. In other reviews or threads related to the Remora it seemed to be a recurring gripe (among many more praises than complaints). Just curious if it was just a few people using them wrong (hacking, etc) or if that's really the case.

well, i'm genuinely curious for exact links and cites...

i seem to have been seeing a lot of posts from folx saying "i read somewhere that ..." and since i mostly hang out here, i only know what i see, which isn't that stuff.

had a long dialog with someone, who could never actually point me to where they read this thing. impressions matter. people get and make subjective judgements, and keep them, despite evidence of use, for a long time. perceptions are tricky and easy to play with, so, just for my laughs, i've been trying to track a few of these down to their sources...

i hear something that seems outrageous and my first instinct these days (on many topics) is "cite?" what? show me. picture? article? what? nothing. "i guess someone told me". mmm. okay. fair enough. where'd they hear it? let me google that...

Part of me figured as much. It's like when I cook for picky people, they would've sworn they don't like to eat so-and-so ever until they didn't realize it was in what they just ate. I was just curious if the negative impressions some have about the Remora's edge retention were even founded in fact or just based off of a few people who had early, not so strong batches of the knife who have now shaped the initial impression that many other people have of the knife. I figure as long as it can hold an edge as well as a SAK or it's equivalent (and hopefully be just as easy to sharpen) that's good enough for me. I mostly want it as a hide-and-forget knife to have around in my car or bag somewhere in case of emergency. Thanks everyone for your feedback (once again, very honored to have Ethan chime in). I never meant to start this thread as an attack on the Remora or anything.

Rogue.

I really did not take your querry about the steel in the Remora as an attack on the knife- just 440A steel.;)

I am deeply offend by it... :D

Like I said, much of the whole edge retention thing is all pretty much personal interpretations colored by preconceived notions. I think the Remora would be a good little knife to have riding shotgun in a bug out bag ,in a BK sheath or on your neck.

I plan on buying three or four as little buddies for my large BK knife sheaths as well as one to mod into a "Slick Remora" EDC knife..

One thing is for sure, the steel they are made from is not an issue for me.

Hey Rogue......

Your question when starting this thread was worth your effort if for no other reason than eliciting Jim62's most excellent posts and the great link to the comparison chart he cited.....Interesting, very interesting....When I chose 440A for the original tac/div tool I chose it for it's superior mechanical strength, with edge holding and cutting characteristics as a distant second....When John and Tooj suggested 440A for the Remora I had very little hesitation--I know that they know a LOT about 440A......They ship an incredible amount of 440A sharp things every year.....On the other hand they had a real sales job about the hollow grind.....It does makes sense on small blades that are designed for capng and fine whittling and although I hope nobody tells Tooj and John that I am glad they talked me into it(they are ALWAYS ganging up on me...WHAAAAAAAA)........

I say this a lot.....There are bunch of VERY decent knife steels...... Not all of them are exotic, not all of them cost an arm, a leg and a testicle or two and if you heat treat any of 'em right you get a good knife and if' you do not, it might as well have Pakistan on it........

All Best....

Really? I can't post a question about things I have heard about a knife without citing every single source? I spend hours on this site (embarrassingly) and the comments I read are mixed into an hour or two of different queries involving 'remora review' 'bk13' 'bk13 mod' 'bk13 vs bk14' 'remora vs. necker' etc. etc. etc...And then beyond those multiple queries, it's further buried into whichever page of whichever query result I read them on. I didn't read a few things and then start jumping in and bashing the steel or knife based off of hearsay, I read them and said 'hmm, let me give this knife a chance and ask a group of folks who's opinion I trust'. If you REALLY want me to go through hours of backlog queries just to coexist with out on the board and ask a question I guess I can, but is it REALLY necessary? I just wanted to ask a question. Sorry if I offended you.

EDIT: I also want to add that I'm glad I bothered to ask rather than write off the BK13 because now I know I want to purchase one, so isn't it a good thing that we can ask these questions here?

No harm in asking at all. Even such 'noob' questions can often lead to a little extra nuggets to keep our blade appetites whetted ;)

Speaking of little nuggets, I have found my Remora just that over my busy season it work.
It was mine and my bosses go to knife at work when we were testing and preparing fireworks and displays throughout October to December. The edge holding on my BK13 was excellent, especially give the
number of cardboard tubes and bombettes I had to cut into.

I could always rely on it to slice its way through my work and I probably only gave it a tickle on my ceramic pull through sharpener a dozen times. It really does sing at fine slicing tasks and I find it much more reassuring and safe to use than a scalpel....and with an edge holding far superior to what I 'should' be using which is a brass or phosphor-bronze blade!!
