Remove filings in wood

I always have trouble when I'm grinding a handle of a knife with a light colored handle and maybe some interesting grain that the dark colored filings from the knife pin get lodged in the grain behind the pin.

Any good ideas for preventing this or floating the filings out??

I usually use masking tape to keep ebony dust out of lighter colored woods. Not much help on pins, I'm afraid.

I just work carefully when I get towards the finished level. I tend to try to avoid the pins while sanding the wood to keep the filings/grit out of the grain and then work the pin down with a needle file and sandpaper separately. I suppose you could even tape off the wood surrounding the pin while sanding it level.

Today I sanded a handle under running water, result was excellent. As the wood was stabilized I didn't worry much. For years I was having real hard time with pins' dust ruining the color of light wood. I guess today I found a solution to this problem. Works for me at least...
