Remove Green Spacers?!

Hi,
could anyone please tell me the thickness of the green spacers?

A few weeks ago I disassembled my RC-3DT for the 3rd or 4th time and was surprised by a burst open screw - I probably tightened it too much when I put it together before.

I asked ESEE for a replacement screw and they sent me a set of screws ( - again: thank you! :)) - unfortunately: The screws are too long.
My guess is that since the desert tan version has no spacers it may need shorter screws. It looks a little bit like this:

Now I'm thinking about shortening the screws - but before I try that I'd like to know what I should expect to remove - and it's pretty hard to measure...

Thanks for any replies! :)

//edit: Ok... I just thought this over for the... i dont know which time but I guess it has nothing to do with the spacers since the total thickness (and therefore the length of the screws) should be the same on all -3s so they're compatible with all the sheaths..
[why do these thoughts come AFTER asking?]
But still... any thoughts/hints?

Custom spacers, screws or handles?

I actually like it as it is (no spacers, with this thickness) - and it may not fit the sheath with spacers unless I'd take something off the micarta.

And I don't want any custom handles and I have no idea where to get custom screws... (I'm from Germany)

//edit: Ok, thanks for the tip.
But... I like it as it is (I just want to tighten it). And I guess I'll just try to shorten the screws a little bit and see how that works. But thanks!

Go to the knife connection they have handle's for the esse 3 and 4, I don't know if they ship internationally though....

you can also saw off some of the barrel center i did that for one of my esee's that i swapped off the scales.

take it easy

Let me check with the shop but the same length screw should have been used on either version of the 3. EVen though the DT model has no liner the micarta is thicker so as to end up the same overall thickness as the linen with liners. But again, let me double check with the shop. Mike

That was the plan - except that I'd try some sandpaper because I dont have a metal saw at my home...

@ Mike: thanks.
If there is a difference the barrel center should have the same length but both ends would stick out of the center differently - it may be easier to catch if screw and nut are completely screwed together. But - I'm probably wrong...

Thanks for the advice!

Hey folks,

I think about getting a new Esee 4 (Black). But there are two things that bother me: the green spacers between the blade and the micarta handles...is it possible to remove the spacers without any problems?
The other thing is the color of the handle...is it possible to darken the micarta permanently?

Thanks in advance!!

Cheers,
J5

My advice is to go buy somthing else...there are two things about the ESEE 4 that you want to change...undoubtedly you will return them to Jeff and mike when you wreck your knife fixing what aint broken.

beckers are all black, have no green handle inserts and are ugly. Buy one of those....i need a coffee...

Play nice. He's simply trying to fix an issue and we will find out what's going on and help him with it. ;)

For reference here is one I did for a customer around Christmas. I removed the green liner and replaced it with a Grey one. With a little time and patience everything worked out. I didn't have to reshape the scales and didn't have to shorten the screws.

What did you use for material J? I picked up a 1x5 foot section of shower liner (the plasticy/rubbery material used as a base layer) and was gonna try that on a different project.

Ok, I've sanded the screw and the cylinder a little bit and tightened it a little bit harder than the first time and now it's ok with no play whatsoever - and i'm not completely sure which was more important - shortening the screws or applying some more force....
I was probably just too careful/too afraid at first that i may break another screw. :-S

Thanks for all of you tips - and have a nice weekend! :)

I used vulcanized liner material I got from Jantz. They make it in TONS of colors. G-10 is also a great liner material.
