removing Benchmade's BK1 finish from blade?

So what we've found is that repeatedly cutting Scotchbrite pads could potentially void a Benchmade warranty?

I dont see why it would void a warranty. I am going to email them, or better yet, I'll talk to them at Blade show West.

personally, i don't care if my warranty is voided... it's doubtful that i will do anything to damage or break the blade.. however, someone may be very sad if they accidentally ruin their tactical finish by simply cleaning their knife

Seriously I think we all are. Benchmade has used two different coatings(yes I know they switched from birdsong to their own proprietary stuff but they're mostly the same). There was a paint like Black-T, which was usually applied over a very rough blade finish and resistant to chemical strippers. I had the displeasure of trying to sand that off of my M4 AFCK, and lemme tell you it would have taken a good bit more than 20 minutes with a GREEN scotchbrite of all things. The other one was a PVD coating, boron nitride I think, which a green scotbrite shouldnt' have taken off in 10 years worth of scrubbing.

M4 AFCK? Either you are in a time machine, or you mean M2. CPM M4 doesnt need the BT/BK coat somehow. My pre-ordered 710 M4 is the second knife from Benchmade made with M4, which wont be produced for a few more weeks, and the first being the gold class Snody 210 that came out at the end of July. Both blades are also PE Satin Finished (thank god). M2 is highly rust prone, so every M2 blade from Benchmade came coated with BT. My mini-AFCK with M2 taught me to accept the black blade, but only barely.

Yeah that was a typo, wires got crossed with all the CPM M4 talk lately :foot: M2 isn't really rust prone, less than most any regular carbon steel. No one is gonna mistake it for a stainless though that's for sure.

Maybe they are assuming you will use power tools to polish the blade? Otherwise, they have one of the worst warranties I have ever seen.

I agree, I like RAT Cutlery's warrenty because as long as you can tell its a RAT, they'll fix the problem anyway they can.
