Removing Black from Military Blade

Is this possible without sanding? Or is it pretty much a sanding deal. I'm assuming it's a gun-kote sort of product that makes it black?
 
you could try a chemical stripper, i use clean strip spray on.

not sure what the coating is, but its worth a try before you resort to sanding.
 
Spyderco uses a DLC (diamond like carbon) coating on their blades. The coating itself is harder than the blade, IIRC it's pretty much like a layer of really hard graphite. I don't think chemical stripper would work, but you can always try.

come to think of it, isn't pencil lead graphite? have you tried one of those big pink erasers?
 
I've heard the it wears better then most TiN coated blades, try slicing a couple hundred phonebooks in half? Or trade it. There's not much you can do to get it off.
