Lansky makes a rubber Eraser block that is filled with a fine abrasive, and while the block is meant to clean up sharpening sticks after sharpening, it also works quite well to remove certain stains as well as scratches from knives and multitools.
what kinda knife and is it collectible???, before you skin the cat (over clean) you may want to find out if you will be ruining any collector value... if its for using then by all means clean it till you are happy with it
personally an old knife i supposed to look like its been around for awhile
just depends on your individual tastes i suppose...
good luck

Is it a very old knife? I assume its carbon steel? Personally i wouldnt do much more than 000 steel wool and WD40... If thats not Bright and shiny enough for ya then you could use Flitz or Metal-Glo Metal Polish... Like i said i try and stay away from sanding, etc. I learned my lesson a while ago doing that
The steel wool and WD40 is what i do to all my Flea market Slipjoint treasures before i carry them, works just fine
all the best
