How would you remove a deep scratch in O1 tool steel?

I used the tip of a scissors to trim masking tape around a blade, while I was making a kydex holster for it. The scissors tip left a deep scratch in O1 tool steel that I would like to remove.

I'm guessing to start with sandpaper, moving up to finer grits as I go, then finish with polishing compound. I do not have any electric tools for this, it will be done by hand. I'm really not sure where to start, with what grit sandpaper I mean.

Any advice is appreciated.

Because pictures are fun, here's the sheath:

Sand away everything that's not the scratch.:o I'd start with 180 or 220 with WD-40
as a lubricant. And don't you just hate it when that one brief moment of inattention
results in a whole lot more work.
