removing dlc

Talking about powerful chemicals. I clean and repair pools. Muriatic acid will give you some new skin and a new outlook on chemicals.
Truth.
I grew up in that (family) business. Only takes once for an 11 year old kid to learn to hold his breath while pouring that stuff in.

Oo that smell and choke you get is something else. Just a little will clear your nose. Too much and you'll end up almost throwing up.

NJBILLK,
So I assume you used stronger than grocery store peroxide.
70% ? 100%?
Muriatic; takes the mill scale off hot rolled steel so . . . anyone try it on DLC ?

I'll go double check my bottle, expect an edit in a few minutes.
Wowbagger Wowbagger

ETA: Standard 3%. That may be why it took a 1.5 - 2 hour soak...

I believe some folks have used muriatic acid to etch logos and designs into blades with using nail polish(?) as a resist. I am not 100% about the resist for the decorative etching, but I know I have seen it for etching logos and designs.

It will be rough on the alloy, and ruin your edge, but that is just a sharpening to correct. Keep it away from a pivot though.

I think I read about muriatic acid being used as well. I wouldn't chance it. I have seen what an unbalanced pool can do to metal.

I know this is old, but does anyone know the "proper" strength os peroxide to remove black coatings and what type of business to get those kinds of chemicals without jumping through hoops and providing paperwork?
Muriatic acid would worry me about any micro fissures in the steel and ending up with a weakened blade.

Chemical supply companies generally won't sell to the public, but thinking someone may know an alternate route like the peroxide use by women to bleach their hair.

First and this is a bit tongue in cheek but would work if you want to try it :
All you need to sand blast is a funnel, a garden hose, a two story structure or cliff, someone to dump very fine sand (you can buy it in bags) into the funnel stuck n the end of the top end of the hose two stories above you. Say pour some sand in and you aim the bottom end of the hose where you want to blast. I have real sand blasting equipment and have done a fair amount of it but that is basically how the dudes did it back in the day . . . way, way back in the day. On a small scale."

You can't possibly think that sandblasting could be done with gravity???
It can't.

Well, it could I suppose. It could be argued that it wouldn't be very effective if one didn't have a couple weeks or months to wait though. And that would be a LOT of sand to flow for months at a time...And yeah, not practical. Or efficient. Or sensible. Or...:D

Some clownbox applied dlc to a custom gareth bull shamwari field grade. I use muriatic acid for some of my own forged blades. I soaked the DLC'd sham clip in this acid for several hours and it did f' all. Keeping it as is.
