Removing Engraved initials

A friend of mine contacted me about how to remove engraved initials off of one of his pocket knives that his father gave him when he was a child. The engraving has faded and i believe that he wants to pass the pocketknife down to his own son.

He would like to remove it himself if he can by hand. Would you guys hit it with a low grit sandpaper and then move up to the fine stuff? Of course I would tell him to protect the rest of the knife before trying anything like that first.

Thanks for any advice in advance! :)

Where is the engaving? On the blade or shield or bolsters.Differtn places take different tactics.

If he uses sandpaper, it must be backed with a hard surface-or it will "wallow" where the engraving is.

The engraving is on the blade itself. I should have mentioned that in my previous post. A knive making friend of mine suggested that the blade be ground with 400 grit sand paper, going very slow and keeping the blade cool but dipping it in water very often. Then hand rub back back to fine grits.

That would be the best way if you have access to a grinder.Your blade may be very thin after removing the engraving depending on how deep it is.
