Newbie with what I am sure is a newbie question. I have a knife that has scales epoxied to it. I HATE the scales. I want to make my own but am not sure the best way to remove the original scales? (Well not original...PO put them on...). And if I hate what I make ( this is my first try at making scales) what is the best way to unepoxy the scale. Can it be done or is it just..."you don't".

I have already etched the blade (thanks clich) and it is looking good. Just need new scales.

Soak in boiling water usually works pretty well for me, depending on what sort of epoxy you've got. I suggest you do it in a well-ventilated area though. It can get pretty stinky...

I have been told that if you put the knife in the oven set to 300 degrees for a bit ( 10 to 20 minutes) this will loosen the epoxy. Just be careful about the fumes as well as drippage. I would suggest lining a cookie sheet with foil and put the knife on that. Better yet, get an old toaster oven and do the whole thing outside...
