On two of my folders (Spydie Rescue Jr. and Cold Steel M. Voyager), I have light gumming built up to the oil I am using. 3-In-One is the culprit!!!

Well today I just recieved my bottle of White Lightning in the mail. I am in the process of cleaning the pivots up. I have everything off of the pivots except for this black/greyish streak on the metal where it comes in contact with the metal on the lock. I've tried scrubbing it with a toothbrush soaked in Simple Green and engine degreaser and no luck. Any suggestions?

Ah, I know exactly what you are talking about. 3-In-One bonds to dirt for cleaning purposes, and makes a thick sludge, a thick black sludge. I have experienced this with EVERY folder I have, but only once due to the fact that most knives are surprisingly dirty from the factory. If it's the factory oil, then the stuff must be crap, but it's no matter... Try simply cycling it out a few hundred times. That should take care of most of it, if this doesn't work then get some Q-Tips and use a blade to taper the sticks accordingly to the area size you have to work with. Apply mineral spirits to the Q-Tips, that stuff will destroy the sludge you have all built up in there. But, if you are worried about the mineral spirits somehow damaging your handle material, then use Brasso, that will also get rid of any dirt or sludge in your knife. AFTER everything is clean and dry, free of ALL dirt, apply some 3-In-Oil and you will see it really does rock.

I had stubborn pocket lint gumming up the works in my Spydie Ladybug and Gerber Magnum. I finally took them to the car wash and used the high pressure wand to clean 'em out. Put them in padded vise grips and stood on the vise grips to keep the knives from becoming a projectile. The knives don't seem to be harmed using this technique.

"Gun Scrubber", available at most gun shops, will remove almost any kind of gunk from mechanisms, and is safe with most handle materials.Easy to use, just read all instructions.Don't forget to relube, as the scrubber removes it all. (many semi auto firearms won't function after Gun Scrubber is used, until re lubed!)Good luck.

Gun Scrubber is definitely great for cleaning BUT it will attack certain plastics. I had it almost melt a plastic backspacer on a Benchmade knife a couple of years ago. I like the waterpic idea.
