What's the best method for removing the finish on a 42a? And how much like a plain 42 will it look like when I'm done? I was also thinking about removing only parts of the finish to give it a patterned look. Can it be done detailed enough for that?

Any info would be of great help. Thanks guys!

I thermally oxidized my BM 42 and, after a couple months, I decided that I preferred the original silver look. I asked for some advice and was told to use a certain kind of sandpaper, I looked around my garage (along with my dad) and we found some black wet/dry sandpaper with 320 grit I used that and it worked great. I dipped a little bit of the sandpaper into water before I scrubbed the handles though, if you use sandpaper make sure you sand in the direction of the grain of the metal.

Cameron gave you good advice, but instead of dipping it in water, I'd spray WD40 on it. I think it works better, plus it smells good.

And pay special attention to the only sanding with the grain part. If you don't keep a constant path with the sand paper, horizontal or vertical strokes, it will look like crap. I might think about using 400 grit, though there isn't much difference between that and 320. Be careful. It won't take much to screw up and getting a good finish on metal is tough as hell.
