Renewed interest in traditionals BLOCKED

Like many, I've been carrying knives since I was a kid. In my case, it started about 40 yrs ago.
I hadn't had a traditional knife in many years, when I was given a Case knife somewhere around 1998. Over the next couple of years, I purchased about 2 dozen. Most of them were put in display boxes, and all but forgotten.
Recently, I have been increasingly intrigued by traditionals (no doubt due to some of the beautiful examples shown on this site). I haven't purchased any - yet - but I have been getting ever closer to doing so. Today, I decided that I would gauge that interest by taking out some of those Case knives. I was surprised to find that the boxes were locked. They've been untouched for about 15 yrs, other than being transported during my 2 moves in that time...and, now that I want to, I can't get at them. (The locks will be easy enough to overcome, I just don't feel compelled to break them just yet. I probably have the keys - someplace.)

I'm guessing that the first step after gaining access will be some lubrication...should I anticipate any issues/failures?

How about a teaser pic - the knife boxes

Hey - two of those weren't empty

This isn't a Case...but it's still a traditional.
For your viewing pleasure, all the way from 1987

Here's what's sitting in the cases:

and the casualty...
Regretfully, I just left this in the box; as it was received from the seller. In retrospect, I should have given it a good cleaning :(

Oh - that first little toothpick doesn't look so hot in the picture; but it's okay.

Love that purple box on the left...
That one's got me puzzled, actually...because I'm not sure I have what goes in it. Alternatively, I'm mistaken about how one of the other ones was packaged...in which case, I'm missing another ABCA knife (which is possible; because I did have a few knives stolen about 10 yrs ago...and those would have been in the same spot)

A little steel wool on that one and should clean up nice. If not, drop it in some cider vinagar for about 10 mins and it'll give it a nice patina. Rinse in HOT water and coat in mineral oil. Wipe down and done.

Nice collection.

It appears that the celluloid is degrading and rusting the steel. This is common on celluloid handled knives. Keep that knife separate from your others.

I appreciate the advice.
Luckily, this was still in it's box; not in either of the display cases.

I'm off tomorrow - so I'll give them all a quick cleaning

Good rub down with a micro-cloth type of thing will soon get the glow back on the scales and bolsters. Slight oiling and everything will be fine, actually, daily use and carry (provided you section your carry like I do, no coins, keys or other junk banging up against your knife) is the thing that keeps it looking bright&vibrant. Locking away in display cases or the knife's box soon leads to a dulling (including the edges I've found, weird) and oxidization state of affairs.

That snake in your avatar freaks me out, one monster:barf::D

Hope you start to enjoy Traditional use and carry now.

Thanks, Will

Yes, you are very lucky that you left that one in the box. The celluloid is outgassing (nitric acid gas) and destroying that knife. If it had been in the display cases, it would have affected the others too.

It is a shame that happened to your nice Tested XX era knife, though.

I see you have another celluloid handled knife in the case. I'd get busy with a paper clip on that case and get it out, just in case.

I already took care of that - the keys weren't in the only place I would have guessed them to be; so I popped the locks. The cases were open when I took the pictures. (But I appreciate the advice, nonetheless, and will remove that one.

Found one more

I'll have to take a bit of time, and get everything identified - some of the boxes aren't all that helpful in that regard, lol. I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with these; as many (most?) probably aren't anything I would carry.

Great looking collection you have there. You used to have pretty good taste in knives, back when you were collecting. ;)

It is probably a fixed blade, but may be a small lockback. Genuine Case made in Germany, rare as hen's teeth these days.
