Reno Khukuri Konvention 2006

I am 95% certain I will be there. The wife OK'd it in principle a month ago.

Maybe I can talk Raghorn into coming down from the Wooded North.

I'll try to make it. Piut me down for a definite maybe. I would love to be able to put faces to some of the great posts here.

Hell, I've already posted my picture around here too often to be considered prudent.

You mean to tell me that this isn't doing it for you?

Oh, wait a minute...you said you wanted to put faces to some of the great posts around here. My mistake.

Let's be serious for a moment.
You should bring a training khukuri made of safe materials.
You ought to also bring a training knife of conventional design, and a training sword. A bokken or a wooden broadsword is fine.
We just cant train with metal, though, ok?
Not a good idea on the first day.
Also, a martial arts uniform is fine, or some sweat pants and a tshirt.
A martial arts belt would be nice, though, to hold the weapons around your waist.
bare feet, tabi, or wrestling shoes are good. Sneakers might be ok, but not pumps (bruise) and no steel toed hell-boots (nasty)
Other than that, bring anything you want, the more the merrier.
I am a practitioner of Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, and I can share with you anything from our schools that I know. I dont know it all, not by any stretch of the imagination. I do recognize that I know more know than I did five years ago, and that could be of use to you.
I am not a licensed, teacher, however, so I cannot accept payment for teaching. Donations to Rams' college fund would be appreciated in loco dinero.

Does this include the Five Points Palm Exploding Heart Technique? ;)

Back to serious discussion: if I can indeed make it, I can bring a spare waster or two for the swordsmen but I don't have a khuk trainer handy. I might be able to make one though. What's a good wood for this? Hickory?

Email sent....
I'd love to come, and it may work out with my existing travel plans that will take me right by Reno on my way home. It's too early to tell, however. I'm in...maybe.

I do not know if I can make it or not I would sure love to go. For those who would want to make practice weapons bigger then your average cutting board here is a place where you can get the matierial that they are made from:
http://www1.mscdirect.com/cgi/nnsrhm

It is called UHMV (page 1786 in their Big Book). In large pieces it would not be super stiff but is easy to work and with some tapering should be fine. Other materials you could consider (check with Danny to make sure he is ok with it) would be Acetal (page 1784) and Nylon 6/6 (page 1778). They would be more expensive and harder to work but would make great, great practice weapons. American Tomahawk used to use Acetal for their handles but then switched to Nylon 6/6. Just to give you a idea of there duarability and toughness (which would mean saftey in this use). Just some thoughts there. Thanks everyone.

Hmmm...

Coarse belts for woodworking would probably hog this stuff righteously if it didn't load them up too badly, huh? I'm getting some ideas here.

I scored 4 old plastic/nylon/whatever cutting boards when our company moved this past weekend. I'll try cutting out a khuk or two and let you know how it works.

Has anyone heard from Mamav? I sent her an email that didn't get answered?

One trick is not to grind on one piece for too long. It gets so hot that it starts to melt into the belt, if that makes any sense. If you can have a couple of pieces to work on at once and just work on one while the other cools then that will help a lot. Use a old shoe (rubber sole) or one or those rubber belt cleaner sticks to clean the stuff out of the belt. Don't know if that will help you any but just some thoughts. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

It's a long drive, but I want to do it. I've never been to a Khonvention and want to see Yangdu and all the Western Forumites I can. I'm hoping some Eastern forumites fly in too.

I think the khonvention dates are being reconsidered.
We are going to do it, and it will be in 2006, but exactly what month and day I dont know...
