Howdy, All Y'alls!

I'm going to Houston in October for a week - Sunday thru Saturday. Flying in from California. I'm staying at a hotel right near the airport (AIH). I think I will probably need a rental car. I'm there for week long dog shows and agility competitions, but I know there is more to do in the Houston area than dog shows.

I would like to know which rental agencies you have had the best experiences with and which ones to possibly avoid. Best rates would be nice.

Also, any tips and pointers on car rentals, sizes, insurance. I've never had to rent a car before.

And if anybody has knowledge of sightseeing in Houston or surrounding areas, that would be good, also. I have no interest in mall shopping. I don't mall shop at home. Unique shops or areas to visit would be cool.

Thanks,

Judy

Move along, little filly. Nothin' ta see in Houston. Move along.

Motor over to Autin for a really good time. It's about 160 miles west of Houston. The night-life is better. The music's better. They's more to see and do around Austin than that stanky ol' sea port, Houston. You can visit San Antonio and San Marcos just a stone's throw from Austin too. Plus the weather ain't as humid and muggy in Austin. Thinking of Houston - just picture an inland Long Beach or Emeryville but where everything sticks to your skin.

In Houston, do however, visit the monument at San Jacinto and pay your respects to all my home boys who fought the war of independence. The view from the tower is worth it.

Java.......

Houston is where I have to be that week. That is where the dogs are. I would love to see all of the sites that are great. But what's around Houston?

My mom lives in Texas. Been to Texas. I helped a friend move to San Marcos. Tubed the San Marcos River. Been to San Antonio and the River Walk. Been to The Alamo.

But that's another trip. My mom and I are planning a Girl's Road Trip and we will go the Fredricksville or Fredricksburg, or whatever it is called. Shopping shopping shopping! We'll visit Austin. San Marcos. San Antonio, etc. etc.

I have to go to Houston in October. I can't help it. I want to see all of the Lhasa Apsos. It is the National and Specialty shows. Dog people and lots and lots of Lhasa Apsos. I'm hoping I can talk someone into letting me kidnap their Lhasa Apso for a night or two to snuggle up with. I'm leaving mine at home because I don't show.

So help me out with Houston, okay? Please?

The Bass Pro shop in Katy is pretty cool. Also nof to far off is the San Jacinto battlegrounds. You can see the area where Texas won its independance from Mexico. There is also a museum and a battle ship you can tour there. I went years ago and it was a neat experience. If you want to drive a little further to huntsville there is an awesome museum in Huntsville (Huntsville Prison Museum). There are a few things to do in Sugarland also. I will let you know if I think of anything else.

Sorry, TJ. Don't get to Houston much...just fly right on through.

Avis and Budget have done well by me. In an emergency, when the cost isn't a factor, Hertz can do well for ya.

As to sight-seeing...I think you've heard some good ideas. And perhaps another Texan will pop in with good, solid advice.

Hope you'll report back when you return! After all, I might just find a reason to visit Houston some day.

JMy mom and I are planning a Girl's Road Trip and we will go the Fredricksville or Fredricksburg, or whatever it is called.

It's Fredericksburg. Call me when you and Mom get to town. We'll go to Porky's for a burger and onion rings and then stop by The Knife Shop.:D

Have ta leave most'a Houston for the others to hep ya out, missy. A'hm a Foat Wuth gentleman ma'self but I'll give ya what I liked about the Big H.

Sugarland, Huntsville, Katy are all close and there is plenty ta do and see in Houston itself since it's a normal big city - only not. Houston is the largest city in the US with no zoning laws so it grew up wierd and there are about 5 city business centers within its limits. There is a large oriental population in Houston with not one but two Chinatowns there and Little Saigon is in the Midtown district. Reliant Park is pretty busy - they hold the Annual Chili Cookoff there and there's a Greek Festival but I can't remember what time of the year it happens. There's the Holocaust Museum Houston and about a jillion other museums in the appropriately monikered Museum District.

You've got Houston Astros baseball but they will probably have eliminated themselves from October play by early August. (About two months later than my beloved Texas Rangers will have choked out)

The Theatre District is home to most of their performing arts and a huge choice of restaurants - of course we make the best damn barbeque bar none on the planet in Texas - so ya gotta set a spell sample the best. There is a Razoo's Cajun Cafe franchise in Houston where you can try some alley-gator tail with yer crawdad jambalaya - not bad for a chain eatery. They also make some great jalapeno poppers.

We got 'cher Galleria Mall (the largest in Texas), Old Market Square, the Downtown Aquarium, Tranquility Park (named for the Sea of. T, where we first set foot on the moon) and Sam Houston Park - with some old restored 1800s homes - fer shoppin' an' sightseein' as well. Here's part of the Big H skyline from Tranquility Park:

TranquilityPark.jpg

The Johnson Space Center in Houston is where I would go but I'm an aerospace fanatic. The piney woods aren't too far for outdoor sights. Tons of little towns and cities with their own unique draws. The courthouse was always the main center in most towns and they provide an awesome and veried glimpse of Texas' past - architecturally speaking.

Yain't a far piece from Galveston, Baytown, and Texas City so if'n ya wants a little drive on the beach action etc, motor on down to Trinity/Galveston Bay and twirl yer toes in the Gulf waters round Galveston or Jamaica Beach - it's a site warmer then that there Pacifist Ocean.........

Ah cain't hep ya with thet there Lassoo-ahpso but you kin pick up a good lariat down at most local feed and grain stores out on the outlyin' farm ta market roads. Just watch out for the tractors - they have the right of way. :D

You and Mom make sure you hit Salado (north of Austin) for some shoppin' when y'all hitch up there. And it is Fredricksburg. The German influence was pretty strong in Texas and Fredricksburg is but one small example. The Chester A Nimitz Museum is located there and they have a herd of cool intimate little shops in FB as well.

"Apsolutely" I'll let you know when my mom and I make take our Road Trip. Won't be the same time as the dog show trip in October. My mom is definitely NOT a dog person so hanging out with a hundred or so Lhaso Apsos would not be her thing. We have not planned a date for it, just that we are doing it.

I just took my mom on a 3-day cruise to Ensenada. Neither of us had ever been on one. She is 77 and I want to make sure we get together when we can for some fun. Last year I brought her out and we went to Disneyland and then visited a town near there where we had lived. Some of our neighbors still lived there so she got to chat about old times.

Spending time with our parents as they age is important. I never want to have to feel guilty because I didn't spend time with my mom or tell her I love her. But that is an entirely different topic.

Fredericksburg. Yep. I actually drove through and spent the night there when I was helping my friend move. Pouring rain, middle of the night when we arrived. Got up the next morning and it was still raining. Didn't get to see much at all.

Thanks everyone for the info. If you think of more, let me know.

My friend from Indiana just reserved our hotel room last night. I won't even meet her in person until October. The Lhasa Apso list is like the forums, but smaller. Only 800 members. You get to know people through their posts, and often become good friends with people you have met online. That is how I have ended up with the 3 Lhasa Apsos that I have - from members of that discussion group.

Heck, I won't meet most of the Lhasa Apso discussion group until October. At least the ones who show. But I will feel like I know them. That discussion group started about the same time as BFC.

judy,

rent the smallest car you feel comfortable driving for a week, that usually equates to cheaper. the cheapest rates i find on a regular basis are through budget. if you end up using them, you will find a way on their website to apply for their "fastbreak" program. it won't save you any money, but it will save you the trouble of standing in line when you get there. you go right to the kiosk in the parking lot and pick up your car. maybe not a big deal in houston in october, but i've seen lines that are two hours long in some airports.

as far as insurance goes, i'd check with your primary carrier. you should be covered by them even when driving other than your own car. some credit card companies also insure you when you use their card to rent the car. check with your credit card company to find this out. the insurance on rental cars is really where they make the most money, it's a total racket. the only drawback to not getting it is that i believe they will bill your credit card for the damage, i don't believe they like to wait for the insurance companies to settle. i can't say this with absolute certainty, but i believe it to be the case. you might ask the rental car company you choose to fill you in on their policies about accidents. if you choose to use your own insurance, some states require that you show proof of insurance when you rent the car, so make sure you have your insurance card with you.

you might also book fairly far in advance. sometimes you will find a serious shortage of cars if there is a big convention, or multiple small functions going on in an area.

good luck, and enjoy,

Winston

hope that helps,

Thanks, I'll check Budget. I'm used to zooming around in a pregnant rollerskate so a small economy car would work out great. Will check with my insurance guy and cc company also. I have plenty of time, but I like to have all my little duckies in a row as early as possible.

I guess I should look into my airline ticket while I'm at it, huh?

I was in the car rental claims business for many years and I've also had occaison to rent more than a few cars. I would recomend Thrifty Car Rental above all others. Thrifty & Dollar are sister companies BTW...

As for coverage, if it is a Texas rental your Liability coverage will transfer for property damage to the rented auto. You heard that right - the Liab cvg will pay for a fender bender to the rental car - not your collision coverage as it would in most other States. So there will be no deductible out of pocket. Only trick is, your liability coverage is subject to limits (unlike collision) & if the accident is your fault, you will have to pay for the 3rd party plus the rental car out of those limits...

For a place that ain't in Louisiana, they do have decent seafood in Houston. Let's see what I can remember... seems like there's an interstate loop that goes all the way around Houston. Don't get on it. There's probably a couple of them by now - it's been a while since I've been there. Don't get on the loops!

My sister lives there, and looking back at the places she likes to live, it's probably devoid of any unique culture, and there's probably a Starbucks on every corner.

In October there is a very big rodeo in Pasadena - a suburb. It's like the Houston rodeo less the glam aspect of it. It's the real deal - been an annual event for years, and easy to get tickets and get in.

I checked and looks like the Pasadena Rodeo & Bull Riding & so forth is usually in the first half of Oct. - 9th-15th the last few years.

Judy,
Not sure where you are from but driving in Houston is not for the faint hearted. I would not get a compact(Corolloa, sisized) but a mid sized car(Cambry) to have some steel around you. I normally allow an extra 20 or so minutes when I'm going someplace in town just to allow for traffic and that 's off peak hrs. Houston traffic only lightens in the early AM(say 2 to 5 ). On the North side of town is Spring ,Tx which has 150 to 200 small shops, arts, crafts etc and is well worth the time. It is maybe 15 to 20 min N of IAH. Depending upon how much time you have it would be worth the money to join AAA to get maps, etc.

Bob,

Good to know about the driving. I grew up driving in downtown LA and on all the freeways around there. Nothing scared me. But I've been living rural for the past 19 years. I think it's pretty much like riding a bike, once you get going.

Thanks for the tip about the car size. I was thinking compact, but if I need the steele, I'm getting it.

The hardest thing, in my opinion, is knowing how to get where you are going. I always try to know my on-ramps and off-ramps and street names so that I am more prepared.

It will definitely be an experience!

I need to rent cars occasionally, and researched a number of companies. I've found that National is the best.

If you reserve vehicle several months in advance, you can get a mid-sized car (Impala) for a week, for under $100, with no hidden fees. If you rent the car with a VISA you can waive the collision/damage insurance (refer to your cardholder policy for details). No stickers to identify you as a tourist (target), either.

2 caveats:

1.) Before accepting vehicle and driving off, be sure to inspect it for any scratches or dings, then point said damage out to agent and have them note damage on your paperwork. Then, ascertain that A/C and stereo are working -- bring a CD to test it. People beat the shit out of rentals!

2.) Plan to immediately drive to a Lowe's or Home Depot. You will be issued two keys, two unlock fobs, and a plastic barcode thing -- all of which are connected by a thin steel cable. Thing is a huge bundle of crap which defeats the purpose of having a spare key. Purchase a .75 cent key ring (large), then go to the tools and clip the cable with a bolt cutter. Now you have a spare key so you won't be locked out. Stow fob, barcode, and ring in glovebox with paperwork until ready to return vehicle. In the unlikely event they ask about the cable (never happens), tell 'em it "fell apart" in your pocket.

Other rental companies may work for you, but mind the small print, note the computerized nanny, and expect hidden fees added at the last minute.

Oh, and have a safe trip! :)

I travel and rent cars constantly. When I travel for pleasure, I go to priceline.com find their best price and then bid 25% less.

It's never failed!

Have fun,

Dan
