Rental Cars and Houston, Texas

Galveston is a neat place to visit. Plan a drive along the coast if you have time. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, where the Whooping Cranes winter, is worth the day trip.

I travel and rent cars constantly. When I travel for pleasure, I go to priceline.com find their best price and then bid 25% less.

It's never failed!

Have fun,

Dan

I've always been afraid to use Priceline. You've never had any problems with them?

Priceline, and similar sites, charge your card immediately and DO NOT issue refunds if you need to cancel.

National -- and other reputable rental agencies -- do not charge until the day you pick it up, and allow you to cancel less than a week in advance.

If you need to cancel your trip for some unforseen reason, you're screwed if you use a "travel broker."

I've used priceline.com for auto rentals about a half dozen times over the last year without any problem.

To me, a rental car is a commodity - a car is a car regardless of which company you rent from. It's all about price.

As a previous poster indicated, your credit card will be charged and there are no refunds. If you think that you may need to change your reservation, do not use them!

Be sure to read the info on their site for there rules and procedures.

Safe travels,

Dan

Sorry, I just stumbled across this thread...

I live in far west Houston, almost Katy. You will be north by the airport. If you like Fredericksburg, then you would like Old Town Spring. It is not far from where you will be staying. From the airport, you will have to go north on Interstate 45 and take the "Old Town Spring" exit (of course). It is FM2920 but turn east. It has many of the same sort of shops that Fredericksburg has. There are a couple of restaurants there that have some pretty good homestyle selections...hamburgers, chicken-fried steak, you know, heart attack on a platter type stuff.

As far as restaurants are concerned, if you like Mexican food, Pappasitos is good. There is one at Airtex and I-45. You will not be disappointed. For seafood, try Pappas or Pappadeaux's. Babin's seafood is my preference in the area. There is one on I-45 as well, about 10 miles north of the airport. Try their crawfish ettouffee (et-too-FAY) and their white crab bisque. My wife can't get enough of the stuff! You are looking at about $20 for the meal, excluding drinks. Barbeque? Goode Company on I-10 is hard to beat but it is about 35 miles from where you will be and there is the traffic factor.

If you have any specific questions, just shoot me an email...I don't check the forums that much lately.

Craig
