Replace a Leatherman Supertool with a Victorinox Spirit

I've carried and used my leatherman Supertool dailey at work and home for I'm guessing 8,9 years. It has served me well. I've also noticed compared to what's on the market today that it's sorta "old school".

The Victorinox Spirit seems to have a good rep. It's design and price appeal to me. How would the Spirit compare to the Supertool? I have large hands and I like the size of the Supertool. I also use the knives quite a bit for tasks I don't want to use my EDC for. Is the Spirit plus worth the few extra $ ?

Thanks for any and all info!

The Spirit is a smaller tool compared to the LM SuperTool. It is more or less sized like an LM Wave. Maybe it would be best if you got a look at the Vic SwissTool X, which is IMO the direct competitor of LM's SuperTool. =)

Agreed.

I have EDC'd a spirit for nearly a year and love it, but I have small hands. A vic swiss tool may be more suited to you if you have large hands.

I agree with ckl, however; I'd say it's the best multi-tool overall not just in the swiss tool line.

The spirit is definetly in a different class to the Supertool and is more akin to the original LM PST in size and design.

However it's become my favourite Multitool over the last year or two. I've got a new LM wave and have used supertools and the larger swisstool in the past. The Spirit is just the perfect combo of size, weight and features for me.

I have a Spirit and a Swisstool RS and i used to have a Supertool .The spirit for lightweight carry but the Swisstool for a direct replacement ( and a better one at that ) of the supertool .

 I agree. It's the size of your hands that would decide it. Spirit perfect for smaller hands and any of the larger SwissTool line (Regular, X, CS, RS) for larger hands. Personally I beleive that the Vic line of multis is the best hands down (ok so I'm a little biased).

Thanks for the replies! would someone be kind enough to direct me to an online source for Swiss multitools?

Heres a post i put on SOSAK and i thought you might like to read it , The swisstool really works ....

Whilst out in the boat today we were unlucky enough to find some lost rope , quite alot of rope infact and it was our prop that found it . One of the crew went in the water to free it ( rather him than me ) and manage to untangle it , we marked the rope with a buoy then went after the nearest fisherman to find out its owners , after a brief chat we learnt that it was lost by a fisherman a few days earlier and had crab pots on the end , so with thoughts of crabs for tea off we went to retreive them .now we are talking hundreds of yards of rope and it was well and truely anchored to the sea bed and alot of huffing and puffing later we had filled the boat with water and rope and had one smelly crap pot sitting on the sponson and we couldnt get any more up , we even tried towing it loose but no wouldnt budge , After a quick discussion we decided to get the knife and cut it loose. Now let me tell you the boat knife isnt something you would be proud to admit you own , its a cheap divers knife that couldnt cut butter so i waited and sure enough ' Dunky you got a knife ? ' HELL YES , the old Swisstool shot through the rope with ease and the loose end then tied to a bouy while we went back ashore to get something heavy to tie to it so it would sink and be of no more danger to anyone else .Sorry about the long windered story But i had a really good time out there this morning doing MOB ( man over board ) with a dummy and getting some time in on helming and also got some time in on the radio .How i wish i had my Spyderco Atlantic Salt with me but it hasnt arrived yet The only problem with the swisstool was having to remove your glove to open the blade , it wasnt the end of the world though ,and im more than happy with its performance .

Dunc5 what a great story! What's the difference between the regular,X,CS and RS models? Is http://www.discountcutlery.net/ a good place to order from?

The regular SwissTool has:
  1. Pliers
  2. 2,3 & 5mm Screwdrivers
  3. Wire Cutter
  4. Bottle Opener
  5. Large Blade
  6. Serrated Blade
  7. Metal File
  8. Metal Saw
  9. Wood Saw
  10. Reamer
  11. Phillips Screwdriver
  12. Chisel/Scraper
  13. Strong Crate Opener
  14. Wire Bender
  15. Wire Stripper
  16. Wire Scraper
  17. Wire Crimper
  18. Can OpenerHard Wire Cutter
  19. Two Rulers
  20. Lanyard Hole

The RS gives you scissors and belt cutter instead of Serrated Blade and Metal File.

The X is basically the regular but gives you scissors instead of serrated blade.

The CS PLus adds a removable corkscrew, abit and bit driver set.

Thank goodness for BladeForums, and felinevet!

This site says "The SwissTool RS has the same features as the SwissTool and two additional features: seatbelt cutter and scissors."

If felinevet didn't better establish the differences, and someone didn't know to look at BladeForums, in order to find things out, you might get ripped-off, just believing the (possibly wrong) web site advertising!

P.S. I have old style Leatherman Waves and SwissTools. Backups of backups. ;)

Great story, dunc5! I like your boating tales! I hope your Buck Alpha is back in-shape!

About the file of swisstool X, is it normal stainless or case hardened steel(non-stainless)?

@ckl,

AFAIK, the file is case hardened steel. It has a hard chrome plating that *could* chip-off if it be subject to over-stress. =)

I dont think the file on the swisstool is as good as the Leathermans , but i myself dont use a file very often so the RS model is more suited to me .

Dunc

Although I have never tried the file on a Leatherman tool before, I once used the file on the Swiss Tool to cut a padlock and it did it without any signs of hesitation. Mind you that it was not a cheap padlock, IIRC it was a Master padlock. Either the Swisstool was effective or Master padlocks suck.

@bama_lou,

Wow! You actually cut the hardened metal? Impressive. I previously used the hacksaw edge on my original SwissTool to cut a portion off of a steel window grill. The portion came off, but I ended up loosing/chipping some teeth from the file's hacksaw edge. Love that file! =)
