Replace my Bhojpure with an M43?

Well I went ahead and put my Ang Khola and kabar kukri-machete up for sale and contacted Auntie Yangdu about an M43... I'm going to miss the AK - it was quite the little workhorse. Compromise sucks :(

I hate to seem like I'm self advertising, but If anyone would like to help out the jobless college student, I'm willing to cut a slight deal for forum members who might want to purchase the AK for their collection or as a gift for someone :)

May I please ask what model you have there on the top?

The bottom is the 15" AK, but for size comparison can you let me know the other knife? Thanks!

That's an 18" 37oz villager Bhojpure by Sher (the tiger) w/ a neem handle. I manage to shark it during U.B's 76th B-day sale :)

As mentioned earlier though, it's a bit heavy for long chopping sessions due to my smaller stature. Here's a better comparrison shot that I didn't include in the sale thread:

Thanks for letting me know the sizes, those DoD sales are great with the special prices and tempting pictures :)

Good luck on your sale. Both beautiful knives but like you said it takes a few to find the right combo just right. I bet the M43 will be great too.

Great comparison photo killa!

It shows how nice the Bhojpure is ...if only it was 1/2 pound less heavy for you I'm sure you'd be very happy with it.

The thing about HI's is that if you have a grinder (or a file and a lot of time) you can easily reduce weight from the unhardened spine. Of course any removal of material affects balance and dynamics so you want to think it through before you launch into it.

(I scored a one-off bowie-thing that when I removed about 5 oz was transformed into an ungodly ugly but wildly efficient chopper - I used it to cut a doorjamb out of my house last weekend, flings chips like a chainsaw but is very controllable)

But, that said . . . I'm craving an M43!

Well I just went ahead and purchased an M43 before even selling my AK or kabar... even though I don't have full blown HIKV, the effects are still devasting on my wallet - I'm now broke until I get those things sold :o

Wildmike, in an earlier post you mentioned that your M43s were 24 and 27oz - are those 18 inchers? the one Aunty Yangdu sold me is:
Overall length 18''
Weight 34 oz
White metal fittings
Horn handle
Black leather scabbard
Made by young Sher kami works with Bura group

Do you think 34oz was a typo? That seems a lot heavier than your 24 and 27 ouncers...

34oz sounds like a lot for an M-43. I picked the same layout as you Killa so let's hope it's 24oz! :D I feel you on the money situation. I have $800 in car repairs needed done before the end of the year. Half of it I HAD to have done just the other day. So I'm having to resort to selling my Colt Commander pistol to make up some funds.

Yeah - I emailed Aunti Yangdu to verify. I don't know why I didn't catch that little discrepancy until after I purchased it. I guess I was just a little too eager :p Hopefully it was just a typo as 34oz is not much lighter than my 37oz Bhojpure that I consider to be a tad heavy.

Sorry to hear about your pistol :(

Come to think of it - I'm fairly lucky, all things considered. I'm in a city with a great public transit system, so I don't need a car that chews up additional funds... I've also lucked out in my two other hobbies: art doesn't cost all that much once you establish your supplies (which I have) and computers have sort of hit a point where the hardware is significantly ahead of what any programs/games currently require (i.e. my computer is already more powerful than I need it to be).

Even so, I still don't come by money too often so let's hope I get those other knives sold :p

Killa & John. My lighter one is made by Royal Kami Bura. The heavier one is by Sher the Tiger.

Just double sahecked the weights.

Bura= 26 oz.

Sher = 30 oz.

My previous weights were off a little due to the scale used.

My Sher the tiger made M-43 has a thicker spine, the longer handle of satisal wood.

When I got my first (The Bura made one) I thought it was heavy. Once you use it for a couple days the weight will be unnoticeable. They feel heavier than they are due to the forward balance. And unfamiliarity.

Being forged there is often considerable variance in the weights of individual blades especialy between makers.

As far as I know all M-43's are basically 18 inchers.

I dont='t know if Yangdu is giving you the weight of just the knife or the knife and sheath.

Let me know what ya think when it gets there.

Yeah will do. It's not going to be anywhere near my U.F. of 40+ oz. So I'm not too concerned. She didn't mention who made mine... I would assume the same kami but we'll see.

Once I get it in I'll do a breakdown of it and comparison to the U.F.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to re-weigh your m43s Mike! I'm waiting on a response from Yangdu as to the the weight. It just strikes me as odd that Young Sher would make an m43 that is more of a heavyweight than one by Sher (the tiger). From everything I've read, Sher (the tiger) is pretty much known for thick, overbuilt kukris so it seems strange that a similar product by a different kami would end up weighing more

Actual weight aside, you did bring up a point I didn't consider: the dynamics and weight distribution of the m43 might also adds to the agility and ease of use when compared to my Bhojpure.

Yeah - compared to a 40+oz U.F. the m43 is going to feel like a feather regardless of who made it :p I'm quite curious as to how it'll perform compared to your U.F. I'll be sure to do a comparison of my M43 and Bhojpure if you do a comparison of your M43 and U.F. I'm sure we'll come to similar conclusions ;)

Sher the Tiger and Bura are the kings of thin edges from what I've heard. My two have very nice thin edges. I wouldn't let the weight bother you much. Like I said it's how the knife carries that weight and puts it to use that is important. 3 ounces more weight over an 18 inch blade is equal to around an extra 1/16th inch of overall thickness. By working with it you gain an afinity and understanding of it.

As an example my two M-43's feel very light to me, the Bura made blade feels like a feather in my hand. But when others pick one up they feel heavy. The feel of both knives is exceptionaly alive.

If anyone is looking for an M43, I am selling off almost all my blades right now due to financial issues.
