"Replacement" knife ideas?

I think you are doing a good thing to help put your mother at ease. There are many options but I would choose something that won't break the bank if stolen and which s easily sharpened with much in the way of tools. 1095 IS great for such blades.

Good luck with it.

I don't know your budget
but
KA-BAR 7" or 5" with leather handle and brown sheath (and being genuine original)
aren't so crazy expensive now !

I bought Dog Head just few days ago, so I know :^)

There are probably some NATO countries where you can show up with your own knife for Basic Training, but in Canada it was something they gave you back at the end of the course and from what I heard in the US it's likely worse. Battle School was different though, because it was mostly field and range, where you regularly needed a knife/multi-tool. Other than your hygiene kit, the only custom gear I would take to Basic Training is a pair of gel insoles for your boots, because those things will really make your life 100% better.

I had one poor bastard ask me what I thought the best combination of knives was for the field and I suggested a small folder, a mid-sized fixed blade, and a strong machete. He forgot to tell me the context that he was heading off for a combined Basic/Battle School experience in the next few days, where after they took one look at his armament, an instructor said easy does it Rambo, and confiscating all his steel until the end of the course.

I'm not crazy into military, and this confirms it that ESEE Candiru is pretty much the best choice in this case. Just in case I need to cut something sometime...

Just to give you guys an update:
As I found a buyer for some stuff I sell, I ordered the Mark 1 last night.
Paid extra for fast shipping.
It should be here by the end of the week.

I'm just hoping she doesn't figure it out. If she says something like "No, that's not it" then IDK what I'm going to do.

Final update:
Knife arrived yesterday, I got seen with the knife today and there was no chance to convince her that it's the grandpa's knife, mostly for the fact - his knife wasn't really stacked leather, but also had white, red and black rings so IDK what it was.
Also, butt wasn't painted.

I'll keep the knife tho. It has really nice feel to it, and it's handle is perfect fit for my hand, I like the size and everything. I held the USMC in my hand and it did nothing for me. But this thing puts smile on my face. I just love this thing for some unknown reason.

I’m left wondering what it actually was? Red White and BLACK? I’ve never seen that combo that I can recall.

Red White and Blue spacers sounds like a Randall

Maybe some of these? Not RW&B though.

If you look you will probably be able to find an Ontario with the right date range on it. Most are stamped with a month and date.

I wonder that too. Based on another of grandpa's knives which we do have and is of flea market's look and quality... this one might be too.

Cheapo Ebay knives were often resaled at really high prices there in Bosnia apparently. He knew a lot about firearms, but probably didn't know a lot about knives.

Another possibility is that he paid someone to make him a knife.

Anyways this is the knife I was given after his death.

It feels cheap, blade even rattles a little, and I can't even get it sharp. Also - no marks of maker or manufacturer whatsoever.

Apparently, the knife that he really bought for me and gave me when I was a kid was of much better quality.

I'll ask my mother when I get home today. Thank you a lot for your help.

This is my USN.
I'm not American or in Navy, but this knife just feels right in my hand.
Handle size and shape (especially palm swell) are really on point. And the knife itself feels and looks like something you would get from your grandpa.
Also, I really like the way how I can see just the exposed tang on the bottom, it may be a stick tang, but I never baton and I doubt I'll ever be beating on this thing, so I'm good.

Thank you for tip. I think I'm in for a lot of googling. I just kinda hope it was something decent, I'd hate to find out someone scammed my grandpa.

There was a version of the PAL RH-36 that had black-white-red-white-black spacers at each end of the leather washers.
Western also had black-white-red.

Kabar bowie?
Just asked my mom and it does look like the knife my grandpa used.

I was supposed to inherit grandpa's guns and knife, but since I was a teen when he died, my aunt just sold those without saying a word about it or ever giving me a coin... and I haven't really spoke with her ever since.

I thought she at least didn't sell the knife, but listening to what my mom said - the piece of China crap my aunt gave me almost certainly isn't the knife my grandpa used.

At least this KaBar Mark1 gives my mom peace of mind so she finally stopped looking for that knife my grandpa gave me when I was a kid.
And looking at old photos - that indeed is the kind of knife my grandpa would use, just without the coating it seems.
