I recently bought a craftsman 1x42 grinder with 1/2 horsepower motor real cheap and in great shape but it's missing a platen. I'm pretty sure this sander is no longer made. I'm thinking I'll have to scab something together out of angle iron or something right? Anyone know of a how to or instructions or offer any advice for me? Thanks in advance.

Without seeing it, it's hard to give any direction as to exactly how to make it--but I would start at finding a rigid piece of steel to make a platen base. On that base where your belt will ride, I would attach (with JB Weld or similar high strength epoxy) a piece of pyroceram glass... This particular glass is heat resistant and will give you a better, flatter, longer lasting work surface. Any of your better glass shops, knife making supply houses or eBay will be a good source.
