I would like to replace the washers in my mini AFCK with metal washers. Anyone know of a good source for washers?

Hoodoo,

Believe this subject has come up before in the Shop Talk Forum. Regardless, the folks there should be able to help you locate a source for what you need. Accordingly, I'm moving the thread there.

Now this is a question that has been on my mind lately as I want to replace some plastic washers with some metal ones on my AFCK and others.
I read that bronze is good...
Any advice folks?

Hoodoo,

You can get metal washers from Sheffield's
Knifemakers Supply. They have them in copper
alloy and phosfor bronze alloy. The copper ones come .002 & .003 thick. Four different diameters. Bronze are .005 thick and 4 diameters. Hope this helps.

you need to take the ones you want to replace and measure them..exact thickness. hole size. and outside diameter...i make my own from teflon sheet...its great...slides great.....you can get it from mcmasters supply catalog...in any thickness you want.

I get brass and copper shim stock from the local hardware store. Use the original washers as templates.

I was just about to replace the washers on my mini AFCK as well. For those of you who don't have a micrometer, here are the measurements:

Factory washers...
large: .654"OD x .225"ID x .026" thick
small: .375"OD x .225"ID x .026" thick

Sheffields carries BP washers, .005 thick with ODs of 1/4"(.250), 5/16"(.3125), 3/8"(.375), 7/16"(.4375)
and IDs of 1/8"(.125), 3/16"(.1875), 1/4"(.250)

A little quick comparison shows none of the washers Sheffields carries have enough OD for the large washer, but I think the 7/16" should suffice. the 3/8" OD will work for the small and in both cases I am going with the 3/16"ID and drilling it out to the required .225"ID. Since the only thickness is .005" I will just use a stack. I will let you know how it turns out.
