Replacing canoe gunwales....anyone ever done it?

... my kids got older, and as such, there is no one to use it but me. and, i cannot get the canoe up on the car by myself.

I was in the same boat myself so I built a trailer to haul the canoe and gear. Now, when I have the time and inclination, I only have to hitch up and go.

that thing is great man! awesome.

i actually did think about getting a light duty trailer, but then i gotta get the trailer and get a hitch to put on my car. i am going to save up to get a nice fishing kayak for the spring. that's the plan anyway.

I still have to get a hitch put on my cars. Right now I pull it with my truck, but it is so light, even loaded, that my cars would have no trouble with it. It is just a McGuyvered jet ski trailer that I bought cheap on Craigslist. A few welds here and there, a small cargo box for vests, etc., and a wire bed basket with salvaged truck bed liner to keep the road grime out.

The big OT Guide weighs a lot and I had a tough time wrangling it onto a roof-top rack without damaging the car. The smaller OT Disco 119K is not bad, but doesn't give me room for my very active paddling partners, my service dog and occasionally my four year old granddaughter.

Good luck with the fishing yak. A lot of guys here use them and seem to enjoy them.

i actually thought of you and this post and meant to shoot you a message....but then promptly forgot. thanks for the interest in the project. sorry to disappoint. ;)

Not a problem:) My kids are bit by the paddlin bug now to the point my oldest has transfered to Ely, MN for school. Getting his Gym credit with a canoing class:eek: Oh, yes, I am jealous!! After your post and the canoe trip in July I got re-bit myself and have plans to build some boats again; like I need more projects.:D

Just remember to paddle Solo, and sleep Tandem.
