Can it be done by the amateur w/out having to mail it into OKC HQ?? And if so how?? How do you get the pommel off??

Also, this is my first post so hello. Please be gentle :D

For most the skills necessary to remove the pommel from the tang will be beyond them. Honestly the work involved to do that correctly would soon surpass the total price of a typical replacement. Are you looking at just changing the handle to something else?
OBTW, Welcome aboard!

Toooj would know better, but I don't think you can get the pommel off without damaging it. Even for us, we would replace the knife if the handle was damaged and we were covering it under warranty. If that's the case here, you can always contact knifesales@ontarioknife.com for help with that.

Paul_Atreides,

The pommel is placed on the end of the handle stack and the tang end is peened to hold the pommel in place. You can carefully grind the head off and remove the pommel. The problem is that in order to replace it back on the handle stack, there is less of the tang left to re-peen. That means you will have to make the handle stack shorter in order to get enough of the tang exposed to re-attach. It can be done but as Sac Troop has stated, it may be more trouble than its worth. If you are handy, mechanically inclined or adventurous, go for it. If not, it may be better to buy a new knife....499s are pretty reasonable; price wise.

BTW: How is life on Dune these days? ;)

Hope this helps.
