Report from the Busse table at Blade!

Yep... double cut.

Jerry is releasing all of the blades in batches. A group of one type of SE and some customs. I think each batch is about 20 SEs and 20 customs.

Today was:

12:30 - SOW Variant SE
2:30 - Badger SE
4:00 - AD SE
6:00 - HOGFSH SE

Suuuhhweeet!!

Only 20 each??? So does that mean there won't likely be any leftovers for the rest of us??? :(

That would be contrary to what Boss Hog said..............he promised there'd a BUNCH of blades this time around........

From the sound of it, the feeding frenzy is a bit subdued compared to years past.

Comments from attendees ?

 Huh? Four releases today of 40 blades each was 160 Busses! Let's say at least 4 each of the next two days (guessing, I would say 5 or 6 tomorrow and two or three Sunday.) That is, based on those guesses, nearly 500  SE's and customs. To me that is a BUNCH of blades!

Not too mention all of the variant colors of Swampie Mini Mojo (Uncle and Mister) and Ratmandu's (very cool blades!) Add to that the LE Yard Dog and we're talking four figures in Wauseon LE, SE and customs!

I wouldn't worry too much. In the past, there have been singleton blades at Knob Creek that, after the Ganza, another four or five were made at the shop for the emailing "Go! Go!" HOGs.

Lots and lots of INFI.

Yeah i`m not too worried there will be more Blades available at the Ganzaa than this aspiring pork rind will be able to afford !

OMG. What's a Yard Dog LE?

I'm confused about what's on the tables. Was it just the customs and SE's being put up in small numbers? What's lying around on the tables for non-customs? What about Rats and Dogs?

Last box opened today when Jerry pulled out the first 2007 BM the feeding frenzy broke loose with hands and calls - Jerry had been flying out the covers all afternoon to the lucky hogs and piglets - here he paused and indicated there was only one place to start - he handed me the knife with folder as the only MITARY FEMALE there - Old Physics was so happy! He rested his head on my back. Yes Jerry knew because when BLUE AD hit earlier and everyone was calling for it - I yelled Air Force - we needed it for Air Force and Jerry turned the cover over. He did ask later if we really were Air Force and I had Old Physics show his ID as I was not carrying mine (Jerry trusted us - but I wanted to show we were not pulling any tricks). The BLUE AD is the only score that Old Physics went out and got a sheath for immediately too! Several times today the women worked the booth for the hog/piglet scores. No one will forget Jerry's look when Colbalt reached over and pulled a BM cover out of his hands! The Hogs were going strong until the last knife today - and a few new BUSSE addicts were added today during the 2:00 draw.

I went back to the show today and it was hard to even get up to the Busse table, there were folks bellied up all the way from the end of the Swamp Rat table across the Busse table and all the way across the Scrapyard table. I went back to pick up a Ratmandu I had been eyeballin' yesterday (sweet knife) I had to buy the knife literally over the heads of the guys at the trough, they weren't budging for anything. And the next release wasn't for a couple hours I think!

I feel really lucky to have scored yesterday. I think there were more than a few folks hoping to come home with a Busse and weren't able to. I talked to Porkerson and he said they had been super busy all day. One of the guys hanging around the trough had his Leaner Meaner Special edition that he scored earlier with him and let me check it out. It was pretty soo-weeet!
(looking like a stretched, pointier version of my AD)

I scored the Ratmandu and I love it. It's the new model Swamp Rat released at the show and it's a beaut. I got the green crinkle with really nice tan micarta grips. I wandered around the show and picked up a Spec Ops sheath that fit the Ratmandu perfectly, and was pretty psyched about that. I hate having knives without sheaths!

I walked over to the Spyderco table and hung around for a bit, hoping to talk to Sal, but he was really busy (again). I ended up getting bitched at and vibed until I left because I took a picture of the knives in one of the cases. Why would you take knives to a show and put them on display in front of thousands of people if you don't want people to take pictures of them? The knives I took the picture of were prototypes, apparently. I would have been happy to delete the image if the lady had been a little cooler about it (I honestly didn't see the tiny "no pictures" sign- about 1" x 2" in the crowded case) But she pissed me off so much that I kept the file and I'm seriously contemplating posting it. The folks at the Spyderco table were nowhere near as cool and friendly as the Busse folks.

I would advise to not post the pic. I hate to hear the attendant was nasty - even though the manu reps get pretty tired of standing around and answering the same questions, it is their job and there really is no excuse for that kind of reaction.

That being said, Sal, like Jerry, really is one of the class acts in the cutlery industry. If you feel like you must do something, I would give Sal a call late next week. Neither he or Jerry would be tolerant of that kind of behavior.

I think it has been standing practice for Spyderco to bring protos to the show for customer feedback and request no pix. Many shows (Indy 1500) request no photography equipment. I would hate to think that a posted pic could result in an influential manufacturer getting the entire showed banned of cameras - I just have to much fun with the trough pics! Alternately, it is kind of nice to have that "in" to be able to interact with the manufacturer regarding design development.

I'm glad you had fun otherwise!

Yeah, I'm not going to post the pic. I was just irritated. I really do respect Sal and his company. I'm a big Spyderco fan and collector and won't do anything that the company thinks is not in their best interests. I went to the Spyderco table a few times though and I really didn't get a good vibe from anyone there. Maybe it's just me, though. On one of my earlier visits to the table I was asking some questions about some of the newer models and the guy was really kind of condescending.

And I don't understand what all the fuss about not taking pictures of the prototypes. If the idea is that they don't want their competitors to see what they have in development, um, all of their competitors were there in the room and probably already saw the knives anyway. I just was really taken aback by the attitude when I simply took what I thought was an innocent picture. You know how many thousands of dollars I've spent on Spyderco products over the years? How many posts I've made in the Spyderco forum? I've even emailed back and forth with Sal and some of the other Spyderco designers a couple times. As a fan I was really kind of hurt. Although I'm sure they had no idea how big a Spyderco enthusiast I am and have been for years.

I would definitely let Sal know.
Of course, you've found that all the fun people are around the Busse booth anyway! ;)
