A couple more clarifications on the Q:...........M4 is not stainless steel, so it is prone when used to some staining and developing a patina.........The higher carbon content promotes this, it is not as severe as D2 and holds an edge better than just about anything, (S30V, CPM 154, S90V included) and is tougher due to a higher Vanadium content and the smaller, tighter and more uniform carbides.
This knife has been carried and used, what you see, the patina, and staining is a natural and expected occurrence with M4 steel.The staining certainly looks more severe in the pics, particularly the small dark spots/ stains on the blade.
The blade is satin finished and the stains instead of being black as pictured are spots of matte finish on the satin finished blade. Kind of like water spots on a glass. The larger stain near the tang is a little darker but also looks more severe in the pic. The spine of the blade has also developed a patina that differs from the satin finish.
