Well, this is my first post.

Who makes a good repro of a large fixed blade Scagel? I searched and found mention of folders, but not a fixed blade.

By way of introduction:

I'm 39 years old, and live in New Hampshire. I collect guns/militaria, but I'm starting to play with knives. Looking for a change, so to speak.

Regards,
Joe

You will find many great makers. Kevin's choices are outstanding. One that immediately came to my mind is Jim Behring & son. I think they specialize in only these kind of works.

Look under treeman knives, as they consign others. Do an ebay search and he comes up often.

Another thumbs up for PJ Tomes. I have a few of his folders and really enjoy them. check out TrueNorthKnives.com as Neil has a couple of PJs Scagle Fixed blades for a great price and ready to go.

Welcome,
I have a PJ Tomes Model 1 with crown stag from the early 1990's i have been considering liquidating. If you are interested email me and I will send you some pics.

Charles Ochs down here in Florida is another Scagel fan. In the past, he has even made one or two of the fixed/folder knives.

Welcome Bavarian Joe! I can't add any additional names here, but I have handled quite a few of Jim Behring's knives... and they are pretty darn good. P.J. Tomes has an excellent reputation also. There is also a woman maker with the first name of Laura, her last name escapes me at the moment, that is a disciple of Dr. Lucie. The pics I've seen of her work are stunning too.

Dr Lucie would be my choice. I also really like the work of Lora Sue Bethke.

+1 on that, Keith.

I am VERY much NOT a fan of P.J. Tomes.

He shipped me two mid-tech knives that were substandard last year, and the resolution left a bad taste in my mouth.

Not a fan, and would not buy direct, feel that his customer service is very lacking.

Doug Noren, Mastersmith, also makes Scagel styles. Ron Welling, Journeyman smith, as well.

I agree with Keith and Steven that Dr. Lucie would probably get you the closest to what Scagel would do. The only drawback is he's probably the most expensive of those mentioned as well as the hardest to come by one of his pieces.

I owned a PJ Tomes scagel style a few years ago. Fit was great, but blade finish left alot to be desired. It's basically a belt finish with a finer grit belt. Every Scagel style I've seen on his table has this blade finish.

I also owned a Jim Behring during that same time. Fit and finish were very good, but if you were going to use the knife you'd end up having to majorly resharpen it since the edge wasn't very sharp. Don't know if that's true of all his knives. He is one of the nicest guys to deal with though so I'm sure he'd have fixed the sharpness of the edge if it was sent back.

Steven are you the person that decided to resharpen two of PJ's knives right after you recieved them?

I am a fan of Laura Sue Bethke and Doug Norens work. I think Laura Sue's work is the closest you will get to an original Scagel.
