Repro Scagel question.

Steven are you the person that decided to resharpen two of PJ's knives right after you recieved them?

I did nothing to the knives that I got. They were plently sharp as rec'd from P.J. If I resharpen a knife when I get it, it is MINE. Don't touch the edge(if it needs it) until decide on keeping it.

Sharpness was not the issue, but even if it was, I don't know how I would sharpen a tomato knife.:D

I don't intend to drag P.J.'s name through the mud. The original question was about who "was good" for Scagel repo's. For my money and experience, Dr. Lucie, and Lora Sue Bethke are the best.

Treeman would probably run a close second to them, and then maybe P.J.

If that was the case then I apologize my post was a little harsh.

PJ Tomes is the only Knifemaker I know that has rehandled an actual
William Scagel knife.

Every one of his handmade knife blades are a handrubbed finnish by him.

Best Regards,

Best Regards,

Okay, I don't know if that comment was directed at me or not since I was the one who posted that the Scagel style I got from PJ and all the ones I've seen from him looked like a belt finish. If it wasn't directed at me then I apologize for bringing PJ's name up again, but it seems like it casts me as being a liar. Like Steven, I don't want to drag PJ's name or reputation through the mud. He's actually been very nice during all the times I've spoken to him. My description of his blade finish is meant to be a matter of fact description. Belt finish vs. hand rubbed finish can be important to some collectors depending on the cost of the knife.

As to whether his Scagel's have a hand rubbed finish or belt finish....There are 3 of them available at True North custom knives. If you look at the pictures you can make out the faint lines on the flats of the blade running heightwise from spine to edge. That usually means it was finished on the belt grinder. Hand rubbed finishes usually run lengthwise point to handle. My knife from PJ had the spine to edge lines, and all the Scagel styles I've ever seen on his table were the same, which leads me to conclude that he finished those on the grinder. If PJ hand rubs the blade heightwise then I apologize for making my assumption.

Here's a nice Dr. James Lucie Scagel repoduction with Norwegian Elk antler tip and the leather handle spacers are originals from Scagel's shop.

I ended up buying a Treeman from Michigan Knives. I thought the Tomes was a little too pretty for my taste.

Best Scagel style repro I've ever seen was a folder made by Dr. Jim Batson. Because the style wasn't as polished or "new" as many others I've seen.

Dr. Lucie because of the connection, and his faithfulness to the designs. He also does the BEST job on the sheaths, of any I've seen. A lot of folks cut corners on sheaths; it's good to see someone who finishes it right. Quality work, all the way around.
